MaxDrown Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Is this a spotted? If so, isn't that a relatively big one? -- Max Drown
MaxDrown Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 Hey I looked up the bass ID, and found that what I caught was a spotted bass. They vary on whether they have the rough spot on their tongue or not. But otherwise they look like a cross between large and small. Basic body shape and mouth of a smallmouth, but the basic color of a largemouth. The dead give away is the horizontal stripe down the side like a largemouth. Smallmouths do not have that at all, but rather vertical lines down the wide of the body. Largemouths are also more green, and darker than the other two. Smallmouths are more golden/mossy to bronze, and spots are lighter than the smalls with the horizontal stripe. Interesting. I learned a lot, and won't get them mixed up again. -- Max Drown
eric1978 Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 A little tough to tell from the pics, but I'm pretty certain it is. The dorsal fins look pretty connected, and it has a smaller mouth. Is that a relatively big one?...depends on where it was caught. On a stream where spots are non-native it would be, but compared to a TR fatty, not so much.

Chad caught it in the Maries River near Westphalia. I thought it was a smallie until we noticed the stripe. You should be able to click on the photos to get a bigger look at them. -- Max Drown
Gavin Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Looks like a spot to me too....The mouth looks smaller than a LMB and the Lateral line and barring below looks like a spot more than a LMB. Nice one if you caught it a river.
405z06 Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 yes, that is def. a spotted bass aka "kentucky", and a pretty nice one for a stream. I caught a bunch of them this holliday weekend at Lake of the Ozarks.
cwc87 Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 Yep forsure a spotted bass. They swim up the maries which runs into the osage river. When Bagnell dam gates are open and for sure when the flood gates are open a fresh supply of all species is released. Kinda a never ending supply of bass that goes straight into all kinds of rivers and streams..
