SKMO: I agree with your answer too, even if it is a bit metaphysical. Go with your confidence factor is exactly why I rarely throw topwater baits I haven't messed with.

RPS - I had to look up metaphysical and as far as I can tell I resemble that allegation. It's a polite way to say I am wierd at times and generally quirky but I am fine with that. I've been referred to in lesser and more specific terms in the last couple hours by my own spouse in fact, and will remind her I am a "metaphysicist" during our next discussion. I am sure this will turn the tide in my favor. She may be calling you for clarification.

Thanks for your support.

Like others, this is just my opinion along with advice from a darn good fisherman who I'm lucky to call a buddy: Topwater color matters little as long as the belly is white. Might be oversimplifying a bit there, but I think the theory is solid.

I generally try not to explain things to wives. I fear I am not very good at it. However, I found this:

"Metaphysical - Longer definition: Metaphysics is a type of philosophy or study that uses broad concepts to help define reality and our understanding of it. Metaphysical studies generally seek to explain inherent or universal elements of reality which are not easily discovered or experienced in our everyday life. As such, it is concerned with explaining the features of reality that exist beyond the physical world and our immediate senses. Metaphysics, therefore, uses logic based on the meaning of human terms, rather than on a logic tied to human sense perception of the objective world. Metaphysics might include the study of the nature of the human mind, the definition and meaning of existence, or the nature of space, time, and/or causality."

It means you were merely explaining that real world color is not nearly so important as individual mindset and practice. Absolutely correct. And clearly metaphysical. Hope this clarifies things for her and others.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

In case my humor does not translate well in text, SKMO and Champ know their stuff and have my complete respect. I am just funning.

Good stuff, rps. :D When it comes to fishing and particularly things like color choices in lures, perception=reality.

Ah well... I showed her your definition and she rolled her eyes and did the little foot stomp thing and advised me that metaphysicist that I am, there was still the lawn needing mowing with subsequent weed trimming involved before I got to go fishing tonight.

She still cannot figure out the nice riding mower I bought her a couple years ago, but yet reminds me often that I trained her on all the handguns and she has her own stash of ammo, so I am in a continual pickle here. Plus I seem to be short one Browning Hi-Power which makes me nervous. Anyway Mowing this evening it looks like, before hitting Baxter area.

I generally choose my color according to the background, in other words the sky. Under the sun I generally prefer black. Late and early, or heavy overcast, white is where I start.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Bumping this to report that today I mailed Tim Hughes several Top Dollars for painting. I have Daiichi Death Trap trebles waiting to install when they return. I asked him to do Blue Shad, House Bait #2, Slimmer, and Gizzard. Now I must wait. Fall topwater time should be ready to begin when they return. I will post pictures.

My wife believes I have totally lost my mind. "You are paying what to have a $5 bait repainted? Why don't you just buy the color you want?" My metaphysical answer fell on deaf ears.

Sound like some great colors! Can't wait to see them.

My wife asked why I started airbrushing my own cranks, vs. why not just buy the ones in the colors you want? My response............because they simply don't make the baits I want, in the colors I want...............she still dosn't understand.!?!?!

-

And for the time and effort it takes to get quality results on a crankbait; what Tim Hughes charges is a steal! I don't know how some of these guys do it!?!?!

A lot of crankbait painters post it can take between 4-12 hours of work on one bait. From the little painting I've done, I believe this is accurate. Of course if your painting a run of lures identical to each other; that speeds things up. But, the time working on a bait all does depend on the pattern/colors/detail, etc.; and that is only ACTUAL time working on the bait. Not including drying time of the colors/topcoat.

On the subject of painting, I really like the top waters and Jerkbaits from Net Craft they are just like Sammys and pointers and the unpainted ones are really cheap. I really wish I had the skills to paint.

But if you are buying LC to repaint you really need to try the Net craft unpainted baits I don't think you will be able to the the difference, except you can buy 5 for the price of 1 LC.
