Dano, unless I don't know some particular part of fly swaps we only tie the number of fly's equal to the number of participants. So we only tie 15.

Also, I got Rolan's bunch in today. I'll keep everyone posted as they arrive. Peppy is a good looking fly. I bet the trout love this one.

15 would be 1 extra wouldn't it? I mean I tied it, so I don't need one back, but it makes it easier on the swapmiester to have a full compliment and just make piles that are identical and ship them to everyone.

I did read somewhere that it is a good idea to tie more, just in case one gets crushed or lost. Then if there are extras, they become a bonus for the swapmiester.

Someone needs to make a "fly rule" on fly swaps... you know like the "man rule" on the beer commercials.

John needs a big book and a big pencil and when everyone decides the rules, write it down forever to be etched in the "Fly Book of the Ages".

I guess the reason I said one extra fly was just for that reason ie, something crushed, and an extra for the swapmeister etc. If I recall the last one I was in, it was one extra.

I agree with Phil, we need to come up with a pinned swap guide.

Everything so far mentioned should be on it.

Toe tags with tying instructions and name (handle) of tyer.

A buck or so for postage or stamped return envelope.

Adherence to the deadlines.

I sure like the idea of posting the pictures and tying recipes of the flys on the forum,

it may give impetus to others to join the next one, and also continues the

spirit of OAF in sharing informatioin.

Just my humble opinion B)

Okay, I've got the big chief pad and a #2 pencil ready. I agree with everything that has been discussed so far. The extra fly's would be nice in case one gets crushed, and an added bonus for the swap meister. I think a self adressed, postage paid, envelope is the best way to go for return mailings. It could solve problems with mixed up addresses. The pictures of the flys are an outstanding idea. I would hope that from this swap will come many others. I've seen them where they are theme based; i.e. wooly bugger swaps, midge swaps, etc.

I'm at work right now, and we're planning a two day excursion to Taney tomorrow and Monday. I work again on Tuesday, but Wednesday I can take a picture of the "toe tag" I use and post it if anyone is interested. It's pretty simple and works out real nice.

I'll also go back thru the post and develop a set of guidelines that can be pinned if Phil is interested. Until then, take care and have a great (and safe) 4th of July.

Dano - Got your fly's in today. They look good.

Okay, here's a list of the "Fly Swap Rules" mentioned in an early post. I think I've gotten everything that was mentioned in earlier posts. Take a look over them and see if everyone agrees, or if some changes need made. Once we get them ironed out, Phil can keep them for future swaps.

FLY SWAP RULES

1. Tie the appropriate number of fly's plus one extra. The extra is in case a fly is damage in shipment. If it's not needed; it's an extra bonus fly for the swap meister.

2. Adhere to the deadline as agreed upon in the swap.

3. Mail your completed fly's to the swap meister in a padded envelope. It is prefered that you enclose them in some type of crush proof box so no damage occurs. Also include a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope for return of your assortment to you.

4. Attach each fly to a "tag" that includes; the name of the fly, and your name.

5. The swap meister will start a new thread under the fly recipe page at the completion of the swap. It is recommended that the new thread be titled after the name of the swap. The intent is for the members of the swap to post their tying instructions here. See rule #6.

6. Once the swap has been completed it is requested that you make one last post, in the fly recipe page as noted in rule #5, giving the materials used in the fly, tying instructions, and any fishing tips/techniques you may want to share.

I think that just about sums it up. What do you guys think?

How about posting the tying instructions here John? Putting all that in with the flys will make for a pretty big pack, and what we send may not fit in the same pack on the return trip. The extra fly are common for the Flymeister's trouble and effort in putting the swap together. I suggest just tagging the fly with it's handle and tyier's name.
