I am having some motor issues with a bass boat that my brother-in-law just bought. I figured with all the helpful insight the OAF members have on here, maybe someone could help us with the boat too.

He just bought a '93 Nitro with a Johnson 150hp on it. For some reason, we are having trouble getting it to stay running. It always seems to start right up, especially when we first launch, but when we try to engage it in gear it dies. It almost seems like it is choking itself out, but I really have no clue. After dying a few times it will finally stay running and let us take off. Once we do get to take off, it runs like a top. Sounds perfect then, with plenty of power.

Do any of you have any ideas as to what could possibly be causing it? I wanted to check here first before we take it in to a shop and pay a few hundred bucks on it.

Thanks guys,

Jason Bussard

I,ve got a 94 150 johnson faststike on my nitro. When I start mine and go to take off it has to be trimmed all the way down or the fuel wont get to where it is supposed to be and it will die. It could be that simple or it could be your power pack, mine went bad and it would run then it wouldn't run then it would die going down the lake. I changed it and everything was fine. If it is your powerpack, they're over $300 locally, but igot mine on line for under $200 and they're easy to change.

On another note I fished yesterday at mutton, I put my report on Predators Greenfield page

Thanks HogBob. We have noticed that it does run better trimmed all the way down. We try to make sure it is down each time, but it still does it some. Hopefully it's not the powerpack you mentioned. Don't want to spend that kind of money if we can keep from it. We are going to Cedar Ridge tonight if the storms are not severe. Will post results tomorrow.

I had a similar problem with mine last year and it was a plugged gas line. When you squeezed the bulb it put enough gas in the motor to let it run until the fuel became too lean and then it would die. The line was plugged with parts of the gas line that had been damaged by the 10% ethanol in the gas. Some of this residue had even gotten in the carberator and it had to be cleaned also. I learned my leasson and now it is Stabil in every tank full.

My first guess would be the fuel/ water seperator filter. Change it and see what happens. Thats an easy fix and go from there.

Thanks guys, I'll check out both of those things. Straw Hat, we've been running Sea Foam in it every tank. It seems to be getting a little better every time we take it out, so maybe it's just a matter of getting that old stuff run through and cleaning the lines out.

If you decide for the mech option. Theres a guy in Republic that has an add on craigslist for working on outboards. We took one of our boats over there the other day. He replaced our trim motor power wire and did a really good job. There was no waiting and he was really cheap. I geuss he used to have a shop years ago. just an fyi
