gitnby Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 I was messin around on the dock late this morning and was watchin a couple of kids and their Dad catching bluegill inside the slips. Nothing big, but fun-size for the kids. All of a sudden I heard this huge splash and thought for sure one of the little kids fell in? I looked over and saw a huge bass clamped on to a small bluegill that the one kid was reeling in. It thrashed the water and let go of the bluegill, but I swear this fish was at least a 8, maybe a 9 pounder. Absolute monster! Yikes! Gotta figure out how to catch that one tomorrow?
mclothier1 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 While I havent had that same scenario happen to me, It did happen to my sons Girlfriend last year. She hooked a bluegill and while landing it a nice 3# smallmouth decided to have a bluegill lunch. She was able to land the smallmouth though. Amazingly both the bluegill and the smallmouth survived and swam off in their own separate ways after the ordeal. Now when Im out at the deeper end of the dock catching bluegill... I will hook one and let it swim a bit, it seems to get the bass into chasing mode. I did also end up buying one of those underwater cameras, and we were able to verify that a hooked bluegill will usually get at least one bass to chase, (if there are any bass in the area) it was pretty cool to watch.
rangerman Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 There was a gentleman that fished TR quite often that liked beating the banks for bass and while doing so would deadstick a pumpkinseed behind the boat. He swore by it and caught numerous large smallies to prove it worked.
motoman Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Re: bluegills. I have always used that term for any type of bluegill/sunfish/pumpkinseed/redear/whatever I would catch. But, what type of panfish is the most prevelant at The Rock? - I was thinking just the good ole fashioned Male Bluegill is what I recall seeing the most?
