Walleyedmike Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Got to fish a little bit on Stockton this weekend. Hit the lake Saturday morning, fished from about 8:30 to 11:30. Tried crawler harnesses on bottom bouncers for the first hour. No bites, only a foul hooked carp. Switched to a Slow Death rig and started immediately catching fish. Boated seven walleye, two gills, a drum and a bass. The only problem was, the walleye were all 1/4" to 1" too short to keep. Fished the flats, caught fish (walleye) in 12-24 feet of water, although 20-24 was the most productive. Water temp 86. I think next year is gonna be a great walleye year as these fish keep growing! Gave a nice young guy and gal a tow back to Mutton whose boat broke down. If he posts on here, I'd appreciate to hear what the damages are. (Hopefully just a shift cable) Sunday morning I worked coves in 20' of water and only caught small blue gill. Moved back to the flats and caught more small bluegill. Decided to relax and swim a bit before I had to head home. Had a great, relaxing weekend at the lake. Good Lord willing, I'll be back in a couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone for their reports, it really helps me get on the fish! keep 'em coming! WM
straw hat Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Way to go. Those walleye may have been short but I now a lot of guys that haven't caught that many walleyes in the last month, let alone in 3 hours of fishing. Hopefully it will be a little cooler on your next trip and the size will be a little bigger.
dennis boatman Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Could you please let me know what a "slow death rig" is? Never heard of it. Thanks. A strike indicator is just a bobber...

Here is a link for rigging up the slow death, looks pretty good, will have to add it to my arsenal. http://www.mustad.no/slowdeath/ Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

We were planning on eating some fish, but I had brought some filets from Devils Lake just in case! That's a great link Carp E Diem. Slow Death rigs are easy to tie, and the hooks are cheap compared to many other presentations. I think you will have success with it. WM

I grew up on Devils Lake, just a few blocks from Creel Bay in Lakewood, well it used to be a few blocks away, it's underwater now. Awesome walleye fishing! Awesome walleye fishing! Cool! The walleye in my avatar is a DL walleye. That is Howard's Bay in the back ground. I have gone up there the last three years, it's an awesome lake. Great Pike fishing too. I'll try to PM you before we head up next year, maybe you'll have inside information? LOL Hope I'm not making you homesick! WM

dennis boatman Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Thanks for the info on the "slow death". Will try it out this friday evening on some flats on Stockton. A strike indicator is just a bobber...

WM No more home left to miss, I think the lake has risen 30 feet since I was a kid, never thought it would reach the house, but the parents sent me a pic this year of the old house in ruins. Went from a decent fishery to a spectacular one. Ha ha, I've never even heard of Howard's Bay, i'm guessing it is a new bay created from all the flooding. I think the lake has quadrupled in area, 30 feet of water goes a long way in the flat country. I didn't really get into fishing hardcore til I graduated and moved down here to MO, so I can't give you too much info on the hotspots, and the lake has changed drastically since I last lived there 10 years ago, but I do remember that Six Mile Bay was always a good producer of walleye, especially for ice fishing, you'll catch some really nice yellow perch in the winter too, and they are almost as tasty as the walleye. I wish that I would have done more walleye fishing while I lived there, I didn't know what I had til I was gone.
