Gilly Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I remember as a teenager my folks buying 2 lots @ Devils Lake and then the developer went bellyup. Did they ever do anything with that clubhouse/marina? I would imagine if the lake is up that much they're long gone. www.drydock516.com

I'm not sure which marina you are talking about, when the lake started rising in 1994ish, the marina by my house was the first to go, Creel Bay marina, then one across the bay, Woodland Resort, went under much later, but they rebuilt it further up, then the Spirit Lake casino was building a big resort just as I moved, and I'm pretty sure that is all in tact. The lake is monstrous, and I really only know the eastern half well, and I don't know the new sections created at all. Gilly Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I think it was called Devils Nest. I remember it being a 'land rush' type atmosphere. South side of the lake. www.drydock516.com
Walleyedmike Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 This has nothing to do with Stockton, but... The only "development" that I'm aware of on the south side of the lake is the casino. Woodland is probably the biggest resort I'm aware of. We stay at a place called Lakeview Lodge. I would highly recommend it. Howard's Bay is on the south side of the lake, south of Grahams Island. WM
straw hat Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I have been following the conversation about Devil's LAke in Canada. You guys have really got my curiosity up. Carp E Diem, you said you thought the lake had risen around 30' since you were a kid. It is my understanding that those lakes in that area are glacier lakes and aren't usually prone to that level of flooding. Was that due to heavy rains? Is the level suppose to drop back down with time? Just curious.
Walleyedmike Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 Devils Lake is actually in North Dakota. Here is a web link with more information. http://nd.water.usgs.gov/devilslake/ WM
Members streamer Posted August 10, 2010 Members Posted August 10, 2010 Stockton has been real hit and miss with me this summer to. I camped last weekend, and on the first morning out caught a 24" walleye in the first five minutes of fishing. I crappie fished for a while, then trolled for walleye and could only get 7 short walleyes that morning. That was the only chance I got to fish that weekend. I camped there two weeks prior and cuaght a 25" walleye the first evening out, then shorts the rest of the weekend. I've been catching some fish, but few keeper sized. But when I do get a keeper, it's been worthwhile because they are good ones!
straw hat Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Obviosly at my age I am very easily confused. First of all, I meant Devil's Lake Wisconsin. I spent a little time on the internet and found 5 Devil's Lakes. Of the 5 only Wisconsin had a city named Lakewood and had a Howard's Bay. Therefore I assumed the lake you were talking about was the one in Wisconsin. Since streamer's last entry I looked at the info for the North Dakota and found no city named Lakewood but I did find a good explination of the flooding on the lake. I was also shocked to find that the lake is the second saltiest lake in the US. Learn something new every day.
Members Carp E Diem Posted August 11, 2010 Members Posted August 11, 2010 Lakewood is a subdivision by the lake, it's still considered part of the city of Devils Lake even though it is almost 5 miles away. I'm shocked about the saltiness stat, never heard that. The lake was pretty high in the early 1900's, but nothing like it is now, went through a long dry spell and people moved in too close to the lake. Ha ha, I remember being pissed off at Kit Bond when I lived there, he was lobbying against allowing an outlet to be put into the lake that would eventually flow into the Missouri river. It has either naturally outleted now, or is really close to it, but the outlet could have saved millions in property damage and lost land. Gilly, the Devils Nest doesn't ring a bell at all for me, are you talking about the right Devils Lake, in ND? Being from there I thought it might be of interest to you. I also noticed some references to the new pump system that you mentioned. It has been installed to help control water levels. I also found that South Dakota has at least temprarily blocked its usage claiming that it may make the river too salty to use as a water supply for human consumption. You can imagine that probably won't be resolved anytime soon! http://www.iwr.usace.army.mil/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=40%3Ahistorical-vignettes&id=201%3Adevils-lake-north-dakota-flood-mitigation-analysis&Itemid=9 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devils_Lake_(North_Dakota) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devils_Lake_(North_Dakota)
