I tried top water in earnest when I came down in May but I have not been back since then for various reasons. Heat and crowds especially. When the water is so warm I just wonder if the bass will hit a spook during these months. I assume October's somewhat cooler water temps would make a significant difference but I am a relative novice. What are your thoughts?

You know how, in the Spring, the water does not warm up as fast as the days? It takes quite a while for the heat to warm the huge body of water through.

In the fall the process is reversed, and it takes quite a while for the cold weather to chill the water.

Some of the best topwater fishing of the year will occur in the fall.

I can hardly wait!

As the water starts to cool a bit, you can also pick up several good reaction bites on a buzz bait...

You can add December to the list, prior to our first really hard cold front...The water is still in the mid 50s many times on December 1st....

I love throwing a Zoom Super Fluke(try the new disco color). Wieghtless with a EWG Super line hook. an work it on top or let the wieght of the hook bring it down to desired depth and jerk it around. The bass can't stand it. I did catch a 5lb 1oz Smallie on an Excaliber Jimmy(chrome/Black back) last september. It looks just like a lucky craft sammy. The kentuckys were goin crazy for it that day too. I can't wait til it cools down.
