Frequently Asked Questions and the real answers

Isn’t eating fish good for your health?

Fish absorb all the contamination from the water they live in, so fish flesh is laced with toxins such as mercury, lead, arsenic, PCBs, pesticides, and even industrial strength fire-retardant. Just two servings of fish per week can elevate your blood mercury levels by 700 percent, and study after study has linked fish consumption to fatigue, memory loss, and decreased mental function. Just buy farm raised fish from China at Wally World that are marinated in raw sewage, catch and release local fish...

So what does the fish industry have to say for itself? It ignores the fact that fish flesh is toxic (the breast milk of some Inuit tribes is so concentrated with poisons from their fish diet that it meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s standards for toxic waste) and points to small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in fish. But you can get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids in nuts and leafy green vegetables … without losing your mind.

Intuit Indians have WIC and get Free Formula so they don't have to Breast Feed, any way, what was the question, I seem to have forgot....

What’s wrong with catch-and-release fishing?

Have you ever seen an injured dog who has been hit by a car or a cat who’s been seriously hurt in a fight? Unless they are treated by a veterinarian, these animals are likely to die from their injuries. Fish are no different: A hook through the mouth causes a serious and extremely painful injury that is often fatal without treatment. But anglers just toss injured fish back into the water—often without realizing what they’ve done.

I shoot injured animals and put them out of their misery, the owners that let them run loose are not responsible pet owners so they don't deserve them. I carry liquid bandage to repair all hook injuries...

In addition to the wounds that are caused by the hook, fish released after being caught can suffer from loss of their protective scale coating, dangerous build-up of lactic acid in their muscles, oxygen depletion, and damage to their delicate fins and mouths. Upon being returned to the water, these fish are easy targets for predators and other fishers. Researchers at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation found that as many as 43 percent of fish released after being caught died within six days. Catching fish is cruel and unnecessary, whether they are killed on the spot or thrown back into the water, injured and exhausted.

Otters have to eat too...

Didn’t Jesus eat fish?

It’s an interesting question, but Biblical scholars agree that the appropriate question for Christians is, “What should we be eating?” The Bible clearly says that our bodies are temples and that we should take care of them. Yet it’s a fact that all fish flesh today is contaminated with heavy metals and other toxins. In fact, fish flesh is just about the most polluted thing that humans put into their bodies. On that basis alone, Christians should not be eating it.

I would think most of them are atheists... So what would they know about Christians?

Today’s fishing practices are also horribly cruel to God’s creatures. God cares for all His creatures, and the Bible counsels compassion for all beings. We all understand that it is immoral and contrary to Christian mercy to torture dogs and cats. It is equally unchristian to torture and kill (or pay others to torture and kill) fish and other animals. Although they may not be able to scream out in pain, fish have the same capacity for suffering and the same right to compassion as all living beings.

I think God gave us control of the Beasts of the Field, the Fowl of the Air, and the Fish of the Streams... I have heard a catfish grunt a few times when I drive a nail thru its head...

I've got a buddy who spends time helping to guard his friends farm. Apparently he raises mink or some fur bearing animal. They've been attacked by PETA several times. Now I'm not into fur coats but on principles alone I'd defend the place if it was mine. The ferocity with which the PETA idiots attack makes you realize just how self-rightous the fools are. They usually trash the place.

I can understand attacking some fur farmers -

- if you watch PETAs fur video - but I'm sure not all furfarmers are like this... hopefully. Raising foxes or mink in tiny cages and electrocuting them for a luxury item is a little excessive... It's not like hunting for food or raising chickens for food. I'm sympathetic with PETA on a very select few issues, but out of all the abuses of animals (fur, puppy mills, trophy hunting) they're wasting their time on fishing. There has never been any evidence that fish feel what we consider pain anyway. http://fishscam.com/faqPain.cfm

Huh? So if you fight against the inhumane treatment of animals, you're not Christian? Do you really think Jesus would be supportive of clubbing baby seals or torturing animals? I'm so tired of modern Christians cherry-picking which parts of the bible they want to follow and which they discard because it's not convenient.

I'd be interested in seeing a little more about this "study" that they are siting here.

They probably took a single line from a large report and gave it the proportion of a large report. i.e. a report stressing c & r with barbless hooks for fish X that stated 43% of all gill hooked fish are found dead or something of the sort.

The study that they are using is from tournament fish that have beat to death in a livewell all day. Thrown in a bag and hoisted up and shook around a little for the crowd. So by a very long shot there is a just a bit of truth in this. But these fish are not your typical C&R as we practice it and as they are trying to sell it.

So you are saying that PETA is cherry picking the bible for their interests?? That is what the original post was doing.

Christians have been killing animals since the get go, animal sacrifices, eating only fish during certain occaisions, etc. Adam should have whompped that snake in the Garden of Eden, if so maybe we would all be without sin and living in harmony with the wild.

WOW i'm just glad I took the time to post this one. No telling how many responses we might have on this.

Personally, don't agree with PETA. Waste of money and time. I am getting ready to eat some ribs and fry some sea kittens for dinner. In the morning I will eat some sausage and eggs and then I'm going after some more sea kittens.

there ain't nothing wrong with going fishing and eating fish, meat, pork, chicken or wearing any of the furs (although I can't afford them unless its a coon skin cap)

See you all on the lake and don't forget to practice catch and release or take some home for dinner. A little management is good, but peta is ate up with the dumbs.

No, I'm saying YOU are.

I'm a person who's for the ethical treatment of animals. But PETA goes beyond that to ridiculous extremes, and because of that they don't get my support. Humans are omnivores and have evolved with the physical means to chew and digest meat, therefore we always have and always will eat animals and there's no reason not to. It's completely natural and there's no ethical violation in assuming our role on the food chain.

But we're also lazy, barbaric gluttons, who treat creatures like inanimate objects that can't feel pain or suffering. To deny that is just willful ignorance. I think it's despicable the way that we raise livestock in this country or brutally kill other animals to exploit some "useful" part of them, but it's still not enough to keep me from having a steak...it's my nature, just like the scorpion that stung the frog.

I do appreciate some of the work PETA does, but I think they would have much broader support and respect if they kept their agendas more reasonable. This latest thing with renaming the fish is just insane...they sure pull hard against that hook for them to be in as much pain as they say. If I had a Sammy stuck to my face, I'd move as swiftly as I could towards whomever was reeling me in. laugh.gif
