steveearle Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I'll clarify.....I hand tie jigs that I am buying from manufacturers...Jewel, Chompers, Omega, etc. I usually break them off too before I wear them out, but every once in a while you get a color you dont throw alot or a jig gets stuck in the bottom of the box, etc. and the collar will dry rot. I throw a lot of War Eagle spinnerbaits and they are already tied, but the other brands I buy, I tie them as well...If you have a real good spinnerbait day, your strands will get messy and uneven....Handtying is my little project when I am done hunting and waiting to fish...when the weather gets REAL bad...

I live in Nixa where the weather never gets "Real Bad". Always 70 and sunny here.

I agree I lived in Saline County AR from 99 till Xmas of 07 and if my bird bath froze over 5 times it was a cold bitter winter, moved up here and we've actaly had s#$@ on the ground for more than 48 hours more than a few times. Wait a minute what does this have to due with jigs?
RSBreth Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I've tied many jigs with GOOD silicone collars, and they still are going strong 4-5 years after tying them. Where are you getting your skirt collars at that dry rot? I get mine from Stamina Tackle (Skirt collars ). Like was said earlier, I lose mine way before the collars rot. The only jigs I "tie" on are bucktails.
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I don't have any problems with skirts going bad in storage, at least not like the old Arbogast skirts, but I think all to often store bought jigs are made to sell. I prefer drab colors with a small amount of color, just like a crawdad. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
steveearle Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I've had the most problems with old spinnberbaits skirts as opposed to jig skirts, but the old Rattleback-type collars are not very good...
