jdmidwest Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Went thru a few old Herters books, Flytying and Rodbuilding. None showed any of the tools or vises like the catalog did. The other vise on the right has about the right shape and size to hold one of the old Herters bobbins so I am guessing that was what it was for. Nice old equipment. Bill Anderson Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 The first pic is a rod wrapper made either by Herters or Thompson. I have the Thompson version, but both were basically made the same. The others are new to me. I have a friend, a Jewish carpenter, whom you should get to know. If you do, your life will never be the same.
Gavin Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 Yep...the first one is a Thompson rod wrapper....worth $5O bucks or so, maybe a bit more.....The rest...nothing I can recognize.
Members Ralph Posted November 25, 2011 Members Posted November 25, 2011 Wire items in the third pic are to support the rod as it is being wrapped. If you will notice, the thread tension device has grooves on the clap. The middle wire piece in the third pic can be placed on the tension device and you have to ""hooks/cups" to hold/rest the blank. The other two in the third pic look as though they can be clamped to the table or bench for added support farther away from the wrapper. I would guess your grandfather fabricated these items himself. dave potts Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 I also have the tool shown on the left in the second picture. I'm sure it's a Herter tool as I have a Herter vise that I bought with it at a public sale about 30 years ago. I always assumed it was some kind of thread holder to be used in conjunction with the vise however it seems a little"over-engineered" for that purpose. I have a 1976 Herter's catalog but could not find that item in it. Dave
hoglaw Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 post pics of those on rodbuilding.org and Tom Kirkman (or any of the old heads there) will probably give you a precise ID in half a day. Cool stuff.
