Brian Sloss Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 The water down here is getting very low and clear, but no problems floating from Greer downstream. It has affected the fishing though. The fish are a little spooky and I have started using 5x tippet, which I almost never do. Still catching fish though, just have to work a little harder. Been guiding a lot lately and seeing thick BWO hatches in the mornings, not that anything has been rising to it. Olive hare's ears have been producing in the mornings lately though. Did real well with it yesterday in the AM. The water is dropping out fast and we really need some rain here. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Justin Spencer Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Boy we need it on NFoW also, probably a good idea going to a lighter tippet. I think I may put up the rod and take out the bow until we get some rain! ozark trout fisher Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I was planning on coming down there to wade and fish next weekend around the 19 bridge-I'm kind of dissapointed to hear that the river is getting really low. If it keeps dropping, should I go elsewhere? I don't want to bother the fish if they are going to be stressed from the low water. I don't mind tough fishing with smaller flies and lighter tippets, I just don't want to be hurting anything.
Brian Sloss Posted October 11, 2010 Author Posted October 11, 2010 Our real low and say Crane creek low are very different. Our river is plenty big and the fish don't seem to be unduly stressed, just spookier and a little harder to catch. You should be fine and be able to get into some fish. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497

gotmuddy Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I think the wife and I are going to take the riverboat down from Riverton to myrtle again next weekend. Smallmouth should be hitting. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Mark Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 The boys from Ste. Gen. County will be down as well for our annual fall float. Even if fishing is tough, what a beautiful time of year to be on the river!! BTW - anyone care to explain the logic of different tippet for low water?

Smaller tippet size for clear water/spooky fish, 5x isn't all that small-lots of folks go down to 7x in the trout parks.
ColdWaterFshr Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I was down last weekend and the water level seemed fine to me. Used 3x and 4x and never had any problems with picky fish. Heavy stones, midge droppers and mohairs worked well. Did notice the BWO hatch in the mornings and saw a couple risers. Turned over some rocks and the kids got to see all kinds of critters: caddis pupa were everywhere, but also caught a lot of scuplins, crawdads. Fall colors should be just about perfect and not too many leaves trashing up the water yet.
Mark Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I'm wondering if the trout are a little skittish, if it might be a good idea to smallmoutn fish and float Cane Bluff to Greer or Riverton to HWY 142 - both stretches that I have never floated before. Anyone covered those areas lately?
