I have been fishing the Niangua below Bennett a few times the last week or so. Caught a couple of trout each time. How often do the actually stock the river section? Is this the time of year they would stock more often? Headed down again Wednesday morning. It's a fun place to fish. Thanks for your input.

I think they stock once a month or so.. They post both river and park stockings (date stocked and fish count) on the board in the park store...

Glad you are enjoying "my" spot.. I call it Zone 4.

Best spots are:

1. 150-200 yards below the confluence (where the spring flows into the river), on the right side of the river is a 5 ft deep pocket just above a long rock ledge.. Usually the larger stockers will drift down to there (rather than just below the confluence).. Shhh, don't tell the power baiters.. ;)

2. Further down at the public access:

A. The riffles just below where the canoes are put in, but be careful cause the rocks are really slippery..

B. The pocket on the left just past the last boat ramp, which is just below where they stock..

C. 250 yards downstream there is an island.. The riffles on both sides are pretty good at times, as well as the hole below the island..

Do us a favor, take home a few limits of those little 8 inch bastards they've been stocking recently? Good luck buddy...

Thanks. I guess it's now "our" spot plus everyone else. My favorite place is downstream by the "island". Only caught one up from there. Saw some nice ones about 20 feet up from the boat ramp. They are very suspicious!!!

I grew up in the Sierra Nevada mountains fly fishing as a kid. I have gotten back to fly fishing. It's good to be back.

Glad you got back to your roots, sounds like it suits ya... I've been fishing the "zone 4" stretch since I was a pup, but just recently picked up the fly rod.. What flies are you using? You related to Jim Boatman?

Funny thing. I'm not real sure what i have been using. Maybe a Copper John? And another similiar with a bead head and tannish in color. Just use what looks good to me. Also have fished a wooly bugger with no success. I guess I should pay closer attention to what I use. Maybe I would have better success. And, no, not related to Jim Boatman that I know of.

Yeah, I never have a name for what I use either.. Oh, BTW, disregard all that advice I gave in my previous posts.. I just spoke with the trout and they no longer plan on inhabiting those areas... Try upstream at the moon valley access, or maybe down on the Lake?

(to my buddies who PM'ed me: there ya go, that aughta throw him off... Now what are we gonna do about the rest of em?)

Well Darn. I thought I had a new Honey Hole. Guess I will spend my time elsewhere. If you get a chance, talk to the head trout and get them back up there. I will be waiting for them. I will give them one more try Wed. morning. I'll let you know if they have left yet..:0)
