eric1978 Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 I'd like to hear from some others (like Al Agnew). Is the carp situation really that bad? I live in SW Missouri and I haven't noticed it yet. I've definitely noticed the spotted bass invasion but really haven't seen a problem with carp? Greg The spots you have down there aren't invasive Greg...they've been there all along. It's just the north-flowing streams on the east side of the state where they've been historically absent until recently. Streams that flow into the MO or MS rivers are having major problems with the Asian carp. I'm sure Al will confirm that, but there's a lot of talk about it among biologists that's easy to find online. In fact, it's such a serious problem it's reached national recognition, although most of the reports you hear have more to do with the dangers they pose to boaters than the biotic communities.
troutfiend1985 Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Here we go again. I think there is a new invasive species, the forum shark. It comes in to threads and posts new subjects that have nothing to do with the current subject and preys on the native posters. Signs of this species can be noticed in the White Ribbon Conservation thread, posts 22-200. I now fear for all north flowing threads. LOL “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. FishinCricket Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 FWIW (to answer a question asked of me on the last page) I don't ever get ran out of zone 3, but countless times I've has to explai to zone 1 fly guys that "Yes, I am in fact allowed to fish up here with my ultralight.. Sure, you're welcome to call the game warden on me.. No sir, zone one is NOT C&R only... Sir, if you need more than 40 feet for your back cast, you should head on down to the river, or Taneycomo or something.." I've never had a tangled powerbait fisherman cut my line and throw my jig in the water for accidentally casting over his "indicator".. Maybe it's my experiences that define my opinion? Ive attempted to temper that experience with trips to meet with some of you. That has been quite successful, but your still 1 (nice guy) to 10 (pretentious, rude snobs).. And for the record I wasn't calling you a snob. I was calling Ness a snob. (he's fun to pick on) Think. Type. Edit. Type. Think sommore. Post. My most sincere apologies for mucking up this thread with my (usual) comedic nonsense. Carry on with your uber-serious indicator discussion... cricket.c21.com

Poor choice of words regarding "invasive". I did know they've (spots) been here all along. But it does seem there are a lot more of them and less smallmouth - and I wasn't meaning just SW MO I was meaning the other areas in the state. I did some reading on silver and bighead carp. Obviously a problem. But I don't think it's clear how much damage they will do to gamefish such as small and LM bass. They seem more of a threat to buffalo fish - fish that fill the same niche. I'm just not ready to accept a doomsday projection like that. Sorry about hijacking the original intent of the thread - but I didn't start the talk about silver carp either. I don't think anyone takes too much offense on forums like this when the subject matter wanders. I certainly don't when it happens to a thread I've started. It just happens. Al Agnew Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 At first I wasn't worried too much about the silver and bighead carp, because I thought they needed habitat with plenty of suspended algae and phytoplankton in the water. They are filter feeders, and I didn't think there was enough suspended phytoplankton and zooplankton in Ozark streams to allow them to thrive. But I've seen large numbers of them in "typical" Ozark waters in the upper portions of the small, direct tributaries of the Mississippi this past summer. On one stream I floated, there was a school in every pool, usually from 10-30 of them in each pool. While they don't compete directly with most game fish (but could be really bad news for paddlefish, another filter feeder), they do eat the same stuff as the fry of many game fish and some of the minnows that game fish eat. So they could have a major impact on both young game fish and on the food sources of adult game fish. Time will tell how much of an impact they will have, but right now it isn't looking good.

My most sincere apologies for mucking up this thread with my (usual) comedic nonsense. Carry on with your uber-serious indicator discussion... Would you have felt better if i had called it a bobber? It sounds like you have had most of your bad vibes from trout park combat fishing..I have seen it too...precisely why I rarely go to them. Its unfortunate..all I was asking was some suggestions on bobber/indicator depth. Please don't confuse the honest Flyfisherman who just enjoys the rythem, timeing and flow that comes with this choice of tackle..with the guy who just stepped out of the LL Bean catalog and decided to go fishing. A clue that would tip you off is that guy doen't understand you can fly fish without a fly rod, ultralights cast nymph rigs pretty good as well. I promise not to confuse the honest spin fisherman with the bucket hallen, over the limit (those are my kids fish), outlet snaggers. Tackle choice defines nothing...I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly from both sides. I myself fished most of my life with baitcasters and spin gear..loved every minute of it. It just became to HUGE for me..I mean I had like 30 diffrent rods and reels at one time, and more plugs, worms, spinnerbaits, jigs, pigs, stick baits, jerk baits, deep divers, rattleing this and thats than I new what to do with. It just got to much for me personally, I like the simpicity that flyfishing offered and fell in love with it while living in WA while in the Army. I now own 3 rods and I can fit all my tackle in my vest...I don't know I guess it just fits my personality. It just comes down to if you're a good guy or a jerk...If you had snagged my line...I might have cut your jig out to get untangled..but I probaly would have tied it back on while I had it in my hand. Actually I would have left the hole to you before it even happened, if your close enough to cast over me...then we are just too close...you can have the hole. Cheers There is no limit to what a man can do or how far he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit
FishinCricket Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Actually I would have left the hole to you before it even happened, if your close enough to cast over me.. Then you'd have never been in that situation, cause that guy wondered over into my spot, not the other way around. all I was asking was some suggestions on bobber/indicator depth. Check page 1, I think it got covered.. Sorry my comical nonsense distracted you. Feel free to ignore me. cricket.c21.com
Greg Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Eric and Al thanks for the responses. Very informative. It sounds like these invasive carp ares something that we all should be concerned about.
