Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 23, 2010 Root Admin Posted October 23, 2010 Duane and I got out on the lake yesterday and... boated. We wanted to see if we could find some blue gill on dries on the lower lake so we boated down about 2 miles below Rockaway and started looking. Nothing. Tried Bull Creek and found some dinks. Boated back to the Landing and got some lunch at my favorite place- the Fish House. They have feeders on the porches now and ppl sitting out there eating buy the stuff and feed the trout- and ducks. So we pulled around and threw a dry at them- nothing. The ppl on the porch said the waiters there said no one ever catches those trout- they're too smart. Well I went from a little embarrassed for fishing for "dumb, fed fish" to "I'll prove them wrong!" We tied on micro jigs under the dry and I caught a fish - a creek chubb. The ppl eating applauded... now that was embarrassing!! One lady was very vocal... "Oh they caught a fish!! And they said it couldn't be done!! Good for you!!!" Geezzz... but we kept on trying to catch a REAL fish. Then I think Duane caught a rainbow. Released it. Then we heard the cat calls about catch-n-release. Caught a few more and got out of there. I told Duane Bass Pro needed to pay anglers to fish for those trout during rush hours... it's good entertainment! We boated up to Big Hole - running one unit or two but barely over 704 ft. Didn't want to chance going thru rebar at that level. Tied on a #14 black zebra with a copper head and set the indicator at 30 inches, drifted down the north back and kept the fly within 5-6 feet of the bank. Caught some real nice rainbows- they were aggressive! We made the drift 3 times, then headed back down to try below Lookout when I got called back to the office.
duckydoty Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Had a great time yesterday Phil! The fishing on the upper end was good to say the least. You may not have realized, but while we were fishing in front of the Fish House on the Landing, I pumped one of the trout's stomachs. Sure enough, them trout were just full of, believe it or not, CORNBREAD and a litte butter too. I am a firm believer in matching the hatch, so I have developed a new fly specifically designed for fishing in front of the Fish House Restraunt. I like to call this fly....Hot Buttered Cornbread. I'm sure it is gonna be a big hit in the fly fishing industry so I am obliged and honored to share this new fly with my fellow Ozark Anglers. Enjoy and tight lines! troutfiend1985 Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 You could call it the lamberts fly, home of the thrown cornbread. Are people still hooking into bronws up there? “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
duckydoty Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 You could call it the lamberts fly, home of the thrown cornbread. Are people still hooking into bronws up there? The browns have fully invaded the upper end. Night fishing has been very good for me. Deep water nymphing techniques must be used when the water is running. One to 2 units have been perfect for working the banks during the evening. It would appear that most of the browns move over to within 15 feet of the banks under these conditions and if you can figure out a way to cast under the trees from the bank and get your fly down very quickly, you can catch alot of nice fish. Big sow bugs and scuds (10 to 14), pine squirrel sculpins, and egg flies have been working very well. Keep your lights off. The fish are there and you do not need to spot light them to ensure they are there. You will will push the fish out and away if you shine them. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 23, 2010 Author Root Admin Posted October 23, 2010 I love the cornbread fly!!! You beat me to it. But I'm going to tie mine with yarn I think and soak it in scotchguard. I didn't need to pump mine... they were pooping it.
Trout Commander Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 You goin' eatch yo co'nbread? Way to "match the hatch" like Ducky said guys! I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
