I'm sure that more than likely this question has been beat to death, my apologies for posting an "old as dirt" question.

Glad that's out of the way,... My question is, what is generally preferred for tippet at Taney's Tailwaters?

Brand & preference mainly

Has anyone ever heard of Stroft GTM & if so, please share your experience, likes & dislikes. :bringitout:

Thanks!

I have some Stroft. If I remember correctly, Rajeff was very high on it. Seems like very good stuff. I havent noticed a ton of difference, but haven't really tested it side by side with others.

I lean toward Rio products when it comes to tippet. Powerflex and Flouro.

I like the Rio fluorocarbons. I tend to use 6x or 7x at Taney depending on the clarity of the water. I am not familiar with Stroft.

I use 2 lb Vanish line for my tippet. Seems to work OK. Of course at night, I up that a bit to 8 or 12 lb.

Thanks for the input! I guess to some extent "to each his own" may apply to a degree. I too have used Rio Flouro, lately I've read where Rio is easily susceptible to knot breakage, line tangles, wind knots, kinks, and coils,is very susceptible to abrasion and nicks, thus reducing it's reliability & effectiveness, all of which I've experienced, and it's overall rating seems to be very substandard. I have a roll that I'll probably donate to the landfill soon, as this has been a problem for me. I'm switching out to something different. Glad for those who have luck with it and I'm not out to speak badly of it, I'm just offering my past experience and with what I've read, and looking for something different to try.

I guess I have been very lucky with the tippet. Orvis has some very good quality tippet. I believe they still post a production date on the spools, so you have an idea of how old it is upon purchase. Just a thought. Best of luck on your search.

I use the Rio Fluro.

Fluorcarbons are VERY sensitive to heat. you MUST moisten the line BEFORE cinching down you knot or you WILL weaken the line. I haven't had abrasion problems with the Rio product. I haven't had any more wind knot problems with it VS any other brand I have tried (Cabela's or Orvis).

I rarely break a fish off ; I do bend hooks out or lose trout that I hook in a milion diffent ways, but I seldom lose one because my leader or tippet failed.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I rarely use 6x or 7x tippet. Too much bass fisherman in me to use 7X ever. I will use 6X for my smallest flies (size 20).

A few years ago (5 or 6 years) I had some unexpected problems with a couple of spools of Rio Tippet too. In my instance it was NOT a case of not moistening the knot before cinching it down. I switched to the Orvis brand and have not had that problem. On Taney I use the Orvis Fluorocarbon tippet in 5x to 7x sizes. The Orvis is somewhat cheaper than Rio too.

Knots always to be moistened, (spit). So I understand Rio's higher cost might be attributed to better packaging. Since flouro is very susceptible to heat, what's that say about pulling tippet through your fingers creating friction to relax kinked & coiled line? Probably not the greatest thing do, eh?
