Blue Springs would be a good bit out of your way coming from Columbia. But assuming you came down 63, the Little Piney would be right on the way. You can access it right under the 63 bridge. Still, I'd go with the Lane Spring Recreation Area access (the pull off for which is a hundred yards or so before you cross Little Piney, about 10 miles south of Rolla. A gate is closed about a quarter mile from the creek (because the recreation area is technically closed this time of year) but there is a place to park in front of the gate and you can walk easily from there. The fishing is usually decent for small wild rainbows.

Egg patterns and #16 Hare's Ears work this time of the year on Little Piney. Really any other kind of small nymph will work too.

Believe it or not, I do know that area. I did not realize that they had trout there. I will be heading that way soon!

When I fish in the park I park in the first lot to your left after you drive over the bridge. I then walk back over the bridge and up the paved road toward the C/R area. I continue to walk the gravel road along the right side of Montauk lake. After the lake the gravel road bends to your right. I hop in the stream at this point which is right by the spring.I then fish the entire stream down to the dam (right by your car). It takes about 15 minutes to walk up, but once you get in the stream there are fish pretty much everywhere. I just work my way down to the dam and end the day right by my car.

Don't forget if you are going to be around Montauk you might as well try outside of the park. The upper Current river is one of the most pristine and productive trout streams in the midwest. "In my opinion of course". There are a few different places to access the river, the maps can be found on this forum. Also there are just as many posts about the flies and rigs that can be productive. This time of year is nice because the crowds are down. Sometimes you may not even see another soul on the river. Plus the scenery is just as good as the fishing. Bald Eagles,Deer,Beaver are common sights just to name a few. It is nice..So check it out if you have time. And any questions you have there are some really knowledgeable people here that can help you out.

Curious what has the water been like outside the park lately?

I am thinking of heading down this Saturday, My last time down it was low and crystal clear and you couldn't get any action unless you went to at least 7x..

Good to hear what the likely patterns for action are.

I love scuddin!!!, so I'll likely be found, fishing the tree debris and banks If no luck I usually do the same as most, have said egg/nymphin/midgin the pools ... I agree with the flash type nymphs that were mentioned

and as its the new hot fad fly try the " psycho prince " Should do okay at Montauk - color of the eggs that are successful and the flash of the nymph's that are successful

" I fish therefore I am"

Funny that you have said that, I am heading down Saturday morning and my buddy said that we were going to try the big Piney first them move to the park. He was talking about eagles scooping up fish. Too funny and thanks for the info
