Zach Bearden Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I'd go pick up that 6wt from the fly shop. Good price range and I'm sure you can turn a 4lb bass no problem. "Its clearly Bree time baby!" RSBreth Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Yeah - that Scott/Ross combo in 6-weight would be a sweet deal worthy of the road trip. Or arrange shipping. Great deal. Jump on it.
OzarkFishman Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 Thanks a million for all the responses. I was expecting something like 5 responses, not over 20. I will be spending the next week or so really looking in-depth at the posts made and doing some research on the products mentioned. About the only thing I know I am going with is that the rod will be a 6 wt and I will focus on quality of the rod over all else (line will be a close second). Thanks again for all the information and I will be sure to keep you all posted. OzarkFishman
OzarkFishman Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 Just went with the Hobbs Creek 9ft 6wt outfit. This allowed me $$ to buy nymphs, streamers, elk hair caddis and wooly buggers. Then added the Flambeau Streamside Fly box. I am just going to use 4 lb P-Line Floroclear for my tippet. Should be ready to catch some bass this spring. Can't wait to catch some whites on the fly. I also have some micro jigs I bought from Lilley last year. I should know if I like the fly fishing thing by this fall. I am excited about this year. Last year my goal was to learn Springfield Lake and by time Fall rolled around I had confidence everytime I took my boat to the lake. My goal this year is to learn how to warm water fly fish. Hopefully I can have some success this year as well. Thank you all for the information. OzarkFishman
troutfiend1985 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Sorry I was late to this party. Cabelas is a decent brand, I have two of their rods and no complaints. But, for the line you will probably want to get some better stuff quickly, especially if you're planning on using poppers and heavier wind resistant flies. My girl started out with cabelas lines because it was included in the same outfit and it was a struggle. If it were up to me, I would put line up with a rod as far as importance for a beginner. Nothing spells frustration/I'm giving up flyfishing because its too hard, like a fly line that sticks like glue and floats like a rock. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis

I have Hobbs Creek stuff on my TFO rod and I am impressed with the reel and line for the money. Sorry I was late to this party. Cabelas is a decent brand, I have two of their rods and no complaints. Hobbs Creek is White River Fly Shop at Bass Pro, but my 4wt Hobbs Creek line throws a heavy 2 nymph indicator rig with split shot no problem. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
RSBreth Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Maybe when (if?) it gets warm out I'll have to take you to a few good wading spots not far from home. You'll have to upgrade the tippet to 8- or 10-pound test though.
OzarkFishman Posted February 5, 2011 Author Posted February 5, 2011 Sounds like a plan RS. I fish with 8 lb Floroclear a lot, so I will have no problem with that. Thanks for the offer, OzarkFishman
Terry Beeson Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Well, I've got to add the Hendrix Outdoors brand to the list...
