JDC's Sunburst thread prompted me to post this question, since I'll be in the market this summer for a new camera and right now I'm bored to death. It's gotta be waterproof, and I'd like one that takes HD video and sharp photos. Those are really my only requirements.

Any suggestions?

GoPro is the way to go! I just got mine the other day and love it. I don't recomend you get one if you are not somewhat tech savy. Check them out online and on youtube. Takes high quality video with different mounts and also stills. Waterproof up to 160 feet and has all kind of replacement parts to go with it. Like I said though, it isn't too user friendly and if you don't have a newer computer you will have problems downloading video.

Eric, I have had great results with the Pentax Optio” W” series cameras. I have an older Optio W30, and a newer Optio W60. They are great to carry while fishing, they are waterproof, and have underwater settings. They are very easy to use, and a great camera on the water to hand to anyone and still get a good picture.

The latest version is the Pentax Optio W90, and would meet all your requirements. http://www.pentaximaging.com/digital-camera/Optio_W90_Black/

I 2nd the go pro.. I have a good time with mine.. Motorcycle mount is really fun. IF I could catch a fish within its 2 hour capacity- id run it on my boat. I wish I would have had it running when I caught my fish in my avatar photo..

all the video there is from my gopro. it's all raw, i just recently got video editing software. but the gopro is hands down the best, durable camerab you can get. shoots 1080 HD video and pictures, shoots a 3 shot burst, pics at 2,5,10,15,30,60sec intervals. shoots 60fps at 720dpi, amazing sound (even underwater), has spot metering available, the housing is modular, durable, replacable, waterproof to 100', etc, etc. best $300 i've spent.

also, they have a boat load of mounts for the camera, and best buy now sells the camera. stop looking, go get a gopro, you won't be unhappy.

Thanks for the tips. They both look like good options, but the GoPro is definitely a badarse lookin' camera that shoots great footage. But a couple questions about it:

Is it as bulky as it looks? Seems like it's kinda cube shaped and would be tough to slip into a pocket. Is that right?

Can you really only take 5MP photos, or am I missing something? You can get 1080 HD video, but only 5MP pics? Weird.

How is it for macro shots?

Eric, the Gopro only shoots 5mp and that is all. It has a wide angle lens on it and seems to shoot up close pretty good from what I can tell. It actually looks like a toy, you know, one you would get out of a cracker jack box or one of those in Boy's Life you would send off for. With the protective casing it still can fit into you coat pocket pretty easy. You can take off the mount to accomplish that. My first video I used the head strap and was hands free for fishing. Only drawbacks so far is the ease of use and and no viewfinder to look through. Although that isn't much of a problem because of the wide angle lens. It's about the size of you palm on your hand. Our Best Buy in Joplin just started carrying them so maybe you could check them out at yours. Check out this website for more info from a guy who sells them and has his own studio.

He gives out tips that the Gopro website doesn't.
