Huckfinn Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Well I took an old boy some wood the other day. He was from Michigan and he was all about catchin walleye. He told me he started champion boats he and his brother. And he told me that he likes going to Stockton to catch Walleye in Feb. Is this true Walleye do some kind of run in Feb. Do they do a spawn or are they just really hungry. Or is this old timer pullin my leg... I dont think he was because he showed me a stuffed one on his wall. very very nice boys I was impressed. And he even showed me what lure to use. Nice guy really. But I just dont know. Well I was fired up and went to Bass Pro and got some Crappie lures. and one Walleye lure. And so I ran into this DVD movie called Seasonal Walleye Jigging Tactics. Watched it... Learned alot about Greenbay Walleye. But they never talked about Feb. in their show. Anybody have any luck In Feb. at Stockton?????? Please let me know somethin... I dont want to freeze due to an old windy man... Ha Ha Huck...

I have friends that fish the deep water close to the dam and they are slaying them now, and will for a couple more months, I usually wait till the middle of feb and hit the feeder streems. some times the walley are pretty close to the swimming beach at roark bluff. often times at the chicken rock area as soon as the ice is gone.

Seems like you guys are some good buddies. Fishin buddies that is. So do i use jigges the guys in the dvd use Knuckle heads lead heads. and gulp 3 in. shiner minniows and stick a 2 in on top of the 3 in. What do you use? I got a crank bait too. I have only caught one walleye and it was on a minniow during the crappie feasting this spring. I usally fish around Highpoint So how far up is Ruark and chicken rock I have heard of them places. Im from Fair Play . The guys on the dvd were right on the bottom all the time is that how it is at stockton?
straw hat Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Basically Chicken Rock is about 1 mile east of Ruark. Ruark State Park is where highway H crosses stockton. I would say that I have caught about 80% of my walleye (especially from Feb to May) on the bottom or suspended less than 2' off the bottom. I don't think I am a good enough expert on artificals to give you advice on them for walleye. Beagle man could probably help you more with that. You might want to read some of the old entries from binman, Bob and others. I usually fish with the same rig I use for crappie but use larger minnows. Don't give up on the High Point area either. There are plenty of walleye around there.

I want to let you know that I have never fished Stockton in Feb, but I have some buddies that fish it year round. Earlier in Feb, they tend to use jigging spoons or jigging rapalas targeting pre spawn areas. Later in Feb, when water temp is getting in the 40-45 degree range they cast Smithwick Rogues along the dam. You want the suspending rogues, and fish them slow...really slow with long pauses. Your DVD sounds like Gary Parsons made it. I've had some luck with the knuckle ball jigs and gulp, but as I said, I just haven't hit Stockton that early, so hopefully secondhand knowledge will help. Members beagle man Posted February 2, 2011 Members Posted February 2, 2011 normally in feb I troll arround looking for what I think are walley on the screen, usually the areas I fish are always a walley producing area, I use road runners, and bounce them off the bottom from the bank back to the boat. I also throw shad raps and bandits, in feb, I do not fish the dam area, boat to small. the walley are hitting real well right now in 3o to 60 ft of water. using jigs fishing below the shad and crappie. good luck oh and high point talked to my buddy and just before the storm they were catching good walley at high point.
