Kelroy Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 One of my favorite fridge magnets- " If God didn't want us to eat animals, why did He make them out of MEAT?"
jdmidwest Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 That's better. 10 pound of beef = 10 pounds of corn and that doesn't even count the footprint of transport and beef processing. Vegetarians have a much smaller footprint. The smaller footprint is caused by the stunted growth due to the lack of meat. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Tim Smith Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 10 pounds of my beef which is only grassfed has a much lower footprint than the fertilizer/water/diesel for planting and harvesting the corn that is probably found as the staple of most vegans diet. Unfortunately even vegans probably rely on corn (corn syrup) in many of their dishes. I would guess lots of the vegans fake meats are made up of corn and or soy which relies heavily on inputs of carbon to finally make it to the shelf. Vegetarians may have a smaller footprint in general, but those that grow their own meat and raise much of their own vegetables have the least food footprint of all and eat much tastier meals! I agree with you here Justin. The idea of a "loca-vore" has gotten a lot of attention and I think it's probably a good one. I also want to be sure I don't play the hypocrit. I'm never vegetarian for more than a few days at a time and I've probably eaten more kinds of animals then most people have. I also made sure to shovel as much meat as possible at my son while he was growing up. But in general, I'd rather have a flat belly and reasonably unclogged arteries than a porterhouse...so I don't have a big hunk of meat with every meal anymore. I'll probably eat less and less meat going forward as much for reasons of health than anything but I'd like to minimize impacts however I can. I have also known plenty of vegetarians and most of them did it in now and then rather than indefinitely. I guess I got lucky and didn't run into many self-righteous ones. Or maybe I don't care what most people think in general and I just didn't notice if they were.
Justin Spencer Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 Most vegetarians I have known are not self-righteous like the true vegans. I personally don't want to be a vegetarian but understand it much more than trying to aviod any food that comes from an animal be it milk, honey, etc. A mostly vegetarian diet can be a very healthy one, but the vegans I have known always look wormy and malnourished. Terry Beeson Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I refuse to eat tofu because I think it is inhumane to kill all those soybean plants then kill all their embryos just to make me a veggie burger... Quillback Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Good point... But if animals could speak, how many of us would still eat meat? Depends on what they had to say..
flytyer57 Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 But if animals could speak, how many of us would still eat meat? But animals do talk. Just because humans can't understand what they are saying... There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Outside Bend Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Good point... But if animals could speak, how many of us would still eat meat? Reminds me of that Jack Handy quote... "If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, and for no good reason." <{{{><
