Wayne SW/MO Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 That's good to know Chief.. I assume then that the regulations were weak, probably because they they hadn't expected using them. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

jdmidwest Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Since they moved them off the Endangered Species List to allow persons to protect themselves in self defense of person and property, I doubt it will change. I emailed them to find out when we should expect a hunting season on them. Since a MO bear season is just around the corner and there have been more reports on Mtn. jdmidwest Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Whens this bear season open? The study is going on now to determine the population size. I was told maybe toward the end of 2012, but I am thinking later. I really don't see any bear sign around here so I doubt if it will be around here. Probably a few bears to start off with in trouble areas of the Ozarks. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
ozark trout fisher Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I am glad they are doing something to make it easier to prosecute those who kill Mt. Lions. I have been getting extremely fed up with the MDC about the way they have been handling that over the last couple weeks. About bear season... In the area I deer hunt in South-central MO, I see plenty of bear sign on a regular basis-this particular area is known as a major stronghold for bears. But I hope it is never opened to bear hunting. It would attract too much attention to a part of the state I would like to stay as unnoticed as possible. There's plenty of good hunting out there for deer, turkey, upland birds, and small game. We don't need anything else to hunt. Even though I am an avid hunter, I really kind of hope there will never be a bear season in Missouri-and I feel the same way about the elk they are introducing at Peck. No offense intended by the way I am putting this, but as soon as we start telling some of those hillbillies down there that it's ever okay to shoot black bears for sport, some will be dogging them year-round just like they do with deer. But I have a feeling we will someday have a black bear season, and probably not that far off in the future in certain parts of the state.
taxidermist Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Endangered or not you can still protect yourself and your livestock and family. Anyone have some cat hounds? Maybe they will allow hounds on bear in Mark Twain?

I was talking about the policy makers at the MDC. I have nothing but praise for the employees of the MDC who are some of the most overworked and underpaid people that I have ever met.
Members kdan Posted February 10, 2011 Members Posted February 10, 2011 You are going to believe anything that the MDC tells you? These are the folks who returned River Otters to the big Piney river and then treated us, who thought it might not be a good idea to put a preadator which had been gone from the river for how many generations into a smallmouth stream,as though we were retarded. We were told we couldn't know anything about this because we were not professional wildlife managers. well they pissed me of enough that I got ahold of Tim Renken at the Post Dipatch and he wrote a few articles about it and then finally years later we find out we were right. Did the public ever get an apology? Now that I went on record that bringing Elk "back" to southeast Missouri might not be the best use of our resources once again I don't know what I am talking about. I don't care what they decide about the Lions but I believe what ever they do will be a political decision science and truth will have nothing to do with it. So go ahead and rip me if you want, I could be wrong. I could not agree with you more!!! Missourians got along just fine the past 100 years with out having to contend with otters or bears, and now we will have elk and cougars??? Smart, real smart.
