Need Help On Tying Bucktails

Recommended Posts

Last weekend while purchasing fishing stuff, I picked up a bunch of jigs without bucktails by mistake. Now I want to learn how to tie bucktails on them. I know tons of websites available with fly tying info, but only a few with bucktails. Does anyone know where I can get a good tutorial on tying bucktails? What materials/tools do I need and where to get them?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Pretty simple, you will need bucktail and a good heavy tying thread in the color you desire. A vise, bobbin, scissors, and some thread sealer. Bucktails are just a bunch of white tail deer tail hair bunched up on a jig and tyed in behind the head. Google How to Tie a Bucktail Jig and you will find several videos.

The thread is the biggest problem you will encounter.

You really have to wrench down on that bucktail so it will flair out.

Most any old thread will break under that kinda torque.

I found GSP 200 is the best, but dental floss works in a bind.
