mic Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I'm looking for a dry fly that: 1. Easy to tie 2. Floats well 3. Can be used to drop all types of nymphs off of The primary purpose of the fly is to serve as an indicator on small stream fishing. It doesn't need to imitate anything and a simulator would be preferred.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Outside Bend Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Chernobyl ants immediately come to mind, though I'm not sure how many small-stream fish are going to be willing to attack it. Maybe a foam beetle or ant with a bright topside, or strip of bright foam on top? <{{{><
Zach Bearden Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I tie CDC indicator caddis... Body: CDC or Seals fur dubbing Wing: I tie it about 2/3 of the way up the hook shank. CDC... Lots of CDC, stack that stuff on there real good. Hackle: Stuff the remainder of the front of the fly with hackle. Put whatever color you want up there, I like brown. I tie these with quite a few colors, Chartreuse, Orange, Pink or White cdc. I can't upload my picture of it one here... But I will try to get another. "Its clearly Bree time baby!" Danoinark Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I'd suggest a Crackleback in about a size 12. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Zach Bearden Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 The first picture here is a couple of the Indy Caddis. Second, a Klinkhamer Special. Designed for Grayling originally, but can hold up some good sized nymphs with the right materials. The third, is a Q-Tip designed by Loren Williams. This fly is nothing more than snowshoe rabbits foot. Cut a hunk off, brush out the underfur and dub your body with this. Take the rest and put it in a stacker. Get the tips lined up and tie them in for a wing. Cut it off like you would the wing on an EHC. All three of these flies will catch trout. Good Luck! "Its clearly Bree time baby!" dgames Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I second the stimulator suggestion. A stimulator is a good high floating attractor dry fly. About 90% of my fishing these days is with a stimulator with a bead head midge dropper. I catch most of my fish on the midge, but usually get some action as well on the stimulator.
