I agree with you Brian. I would love to see alternative fuels and I would love to see the enviroment cleaned up. Unfortunatley the vocal people in this issue, as in most issues, are the extremists. There are loonies on both sides of the issue. On one side there are people who, as you said, dismiss enviromentalists as loonies and then on the other there are people who want to do such absurd things as put balloons in cow butts or priveys on the praries. I am an enviromentalist myself. I am just not a fire breather. I think if things are kept within reason there is a lot better chance at getting positive work done.

Well for those of you that drive diesel trucks, get the conversion to bio deisel, which is pretty much corn oil. and the majority of the hybrids that have come out have the same power as the plain ole hoopty that you drive now. and can pull a bass boat down the highway at 80mph.

as for global warming, (another time i can actually use my degree for) this stuff has been going on for millions of years. the earth is just going through her cycle. the same cycle that she has been on for however many years she has been around. Think of it like a human woman...only instead of weeks its hundreds of years...this is just the menstrual cycle of the earth. with the hot flashes!!!!lmao

I think people should demand more bio fuels. Corn oil for diesels and ethanol for cars. It would be good for the enviroment, good to help reduce our need for overseas oil, help reduce the prices of gasoline and help the farmers. Hmmmm I wounder who is really against this.... the government don't like the idea because they are afraid they because the fuels could be made in ones garage and therefore Uncle Sam might lose a few $$ in road taxes.

Has anyone (other than me) noticed how much tax is paid per gallon of gas at the pumps alone? Sheezzzz.

The only thing about these fuels is if they become the only fuels offered at pumps (like leaded gas in the 70's) the cars AND BOATS which run on good ol' premium 93 octane will be hard to get and higher priced.

Agreed but, I doubt that we (the USA) could grow enough corn ect that they would ever be the only fuels offered at the pump. I do think if we reduced our dependency on import oil by say 30 or 40 or even 50% we would see the prices of fossil fuels drop drastically.

Its a mistake to think in terms of Corn for Bio fuels, Corn was used because we had a huge glut of it, but but there are many plants that can be used. Its is said that we have enough Prairie grass to supply much of our fuel somewhat naturally.

Agreed on the corn. That is why I said ect. I understand they can also make ethanol from wood and grass. A few days ago I was reading that alge can produce more gallons of biodiesel and ethanol per acre than anything other crop. Of course farmers would have to build ponds and lakes to raise it in. Possible even increased habitat for wildlife and more fishing opportunities from producing our own fuel. Now that would be cool.

The plant in SW Missouri, that was making diesel out of Turkey parts, was closed due to odor. I never had the pleasure of smelling it so I don't know how extensive the problem was, but I have smelled refineries that were processing crude that was heavy in Sulfur, and I can't imagine it could be much worse.

I lived close to the old Amco refinery in Kansas City when I was a kid. Man it could get LOUD (meaning really smell bad) around there at times.

the pond thing would be pretty cool, but for one, it costs a lot of money to make a pond, not all soils can hold the water effectively. You can seal a pond with bentonite but if you live in the wrong spot, you can pretty much plan on spending hundreds of thousdands of dollars!
