Does anyone use braid as backing on their casting and/or spinning reels to save money on mono or fluorocarbon. Saw an episode od Bass Pros and KVD had a brief segement on it. What type of braid is best? what knot do you use to secure the lines? Thanks in advance.

A spool of mono only costs about 6-8 dollars depending on size. A spool of braid costs a lot more than that. I figure if I'm gonna use braid, I'd spool up with it and just use a 10-15' leader of mono or flouro when fishing.

Most baitcasters and spinning rods only hold 100-150 yds or so of mono and I guess the idea you are getting at is to reduce the amount of mono or flouro you have to spool up with. I just fill my spools with mono and when the line gets short on my spool from cutting off and retying or if the end is getting old, I just strip off about 25 yards and tie on some fresh mono to the end of that using a blood knot.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I hate to call B.S. on someone, but I doubt if KVD is using braid backing to save money on fluoro or mono. His sponsor's give him all he could want, or ever use.

There's plenty of us here on this board that use mono as backing for braid, but I doubt if there's any doing the opposite.

He did not say he was using braid...but I was curious if that is what he was using. What do you use to extend your money on expensive fluorocarbon or mono?

What is the most common backing?

im kinda pissy about them selling flouro in 200yd spools considering all my spinning reels hold 280 or more of the line sizes i use, yeah its a alright idea but i dont like the sticking when you tie the 2 in your casting. i use 3 different line sizes and im not buying bulk spools of 3 diff at that monster price along with my mono. what happend to the good days of 300yd and 330yd sizes.

I would imagine he uses the old fashioned Dacron braid. Cabelas sells it. It does not deteriorate quickly, packs tight, and makes a great backing. Use two uni's to tie together.

MODIFIED 3/21:

Cabelas sells Prestige Dacron Braid in 20 lb. test at $15 for 500 yards.

It's not uncommon for me to have two or even three different line sizes on my larger reels to save money, but I have never used braid as a backing. I'm with the other folks that said the other way around makes more sense.
