watermen Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I've fished Mill Creek a couple times in the last month. This is a typical small creek, with typical wild, small trout. (there are reports of bigger fish in here, however....) If your expectation is that you will catch a "record" trout, go to a trout park.. Recommend dry flies in the #14 range... Elk hair or anything brown... I catch a lot of 6 inch ones. The water is pretty shallow with the odd out "hole." Good luck.
watermen Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Saw several people fishing mill creek on wed when I was chasing turkeys and mushrooms up kaintuk. Water looked good but one guy I talked to said trout were all small. 30 years ago it had lots of 4 or 5 pounders in it. Wish it would come back I must be getting old if I remember the good old days, haven't fished it in 25 years probably won't ever again. It is not what it once was. rather drive to michigan once a year and get my big trout fill. Anybody fish the hex hatch anymore?
Kayser Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Are there any good places to find Morels around Mill Creek? I'm in Rolla and I've been hoping to find a good spot to go out and get at least one meal (without trespassing). Haven't found any around here really, but I also haven't had much time to look- morel season is usually finals time for me. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
watermen Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 I'd say they're about over here now. Too muddy for me and the creeks will wash out all the bottoms now. Had a good year found 3 hundred or so. I do better back in some wet holler usually in this area. all the area south of newburgh has some morels at one time or another. Lots of public land just find a draw and walk it out with special attention to the sides and bottom. You will find alot of greys growing right next to white oak trunks on the side hills around here. Not much ash or elm in the woods around here. Some people get them pretty good in fencelines around old pastures stick to the turkey woods myself mostly. THIS RAIN IS GOING TO BE HARD ON THE HATCH. TOOO MUCH!! have a second tag and they should be active trying to nest a second time. I did find 28 blacks in the pasture on the 4th of may 4 years ago so maybe there would be some morels, but turkeys would be a better bet the river fishing is done for weeks I would say now.
