Members Capt. Hook Posted April 4, 2011 Members Posted April 4, 2011 I read in the Conservationist that we are supposed to have a big Cicada hatch this spring, so I was wondering if anyone has some good patterns to try out in the park?
Jack Jones Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 (1) Start by going to Tim's Fly shop and talking to him. See what he recommends. (2) If you just wanna catch fish, buy the "Al's Fish Food" flies at Tim's fly shop. I fish it on a 2 or 33 fly rig up by the twin falls outlets just below the hatchery. Let them drift out into the outflow and start catching.... I was there yesterday and took about a dozen on them that way. (3) I have always had luck on tan elk hair caddis as well. Blue wing olives work great too. That's my 2 cents. "Thanks to Mother Mercy, Thanks to Brother Wine, Another night is over and we're walking down the line" - David Mallett
Gavin Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Ha!..Those park fish will never live long enough to figure out Cicada's...but if you want some periodical cicada patterns a black bass popper with some orange on it does about as well as anything. Cheers.
laker67 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Ha!..Those park fish will never live long enough to figure out Cicada's... My thoughts exactly Gavin. Years back, when we could still fish flies in zone 3 at bssp, I watched a guy using the real thing. He was fishing them on the bottom just like powerbait and catching fish.
Gavin Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Bet he was...anything fished deep enough will catch fish if its real bait...not fake & no good.... A few possibles...seems the last batch of periodical has left the fly box, and I'm lacking in the orange leg category...Think I'll wind a few in the next couple of weeks..

Not true, the park fish will gorge on cicadas, they do every time we have them in the park, it only takes a day or two and park fish, start looking around and eating the food that is available in the river, I understand why you would think that, but they start acting more like river born fish pretty quickly, some do make the transition and become very cagy, they can be as hard as any other trout in missori or arkanas to catch, but Most do wind up in the skillet. Oh, i do tie a good cicada pattern it works great in the park, and the other local streams and even in table rock everything eats the cicadas.
