Wayne SW/MO Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 They have a following of long rodders. Because of their tendency to go into high gear at the hookset some call them Golden Bones. The crawfish imitation does a good job and larger SJW,s are popular. I've seen at least one big Koi in the rock. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members JerryK Posted April 6, 2011 Members Posted April 6, 2011 I have seen them and caught them in the early spring in main lake bays. I think they spawn earlier than the bass. One spring I was throwing a wart and working it in bays for bass. It was pre spawn for them but I was trying to see if I could catch any bass. I probably caught 6 large carp that day working it slowly. It got to the point where I could see them in a bay and catch one right away. Try it and see if it works again.
Sam Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Hey, fellers - who's to say what's more "rewarding" in how we enjoy the outdoors? If a guy's favorite sport is skunk hunting with a knife that's fine with me - he's just not riding in my truck afterwards! I don't doubt that fly-fishing for big carp has been figured out by some - after all, that 52-incher I was talking about bit on my tiny gitzit tube. I found the other idea of drilling hard kernels of corn to keep them on a treble hook real interesting, too. I learned something from that post, and while I've never fished for carp on purpose I might try that some day. We've all got our own favorite ways of enjoying the lakes, and we oughta all support each other's favorite ways to the fullest so we can all have a good time. I think we even oughta put up with the bass guys.
Members jwood Posted April 6, 2011 Members Posted April 6, 2011 Take it easy pal. You have your way and I have mine. I didn't bash your approach, just said it would be near impossible. I bet you won't catch 1 carp on your rig by the time I have landed 100. Hell I bet you will NEVER catch a carp on TR with what you are trying to do unless you go to the State Park Marina, throw some food pellets in, then get your fly rod out and pitch it into the feeding frenzy. You don't want my advice fine, just leave it. No, need to get all pissy with attitude. Rewarding???? Seeing how young kids get super excited to catch even itty bitty bluegill, sunfish and black perch and then have them reel one of these 15-40lb monsters in....they go crazy and you can just see the pure joy, shock and awe of the size of what they have just caught. That will last forever, I know because at one time I was that kid. Now I am paying it back. Thats the "REWARD" as I see it. I was just trying to help but you know it all apparently so why even ask for info/help on this forum? You already have it figured out. Good post about being a kid and catching fish; that is what it is all about Joe
Members waterdogg Posted April 6, 2011 Members Posted April 6, 2011 The original post was never about anything other than trying to get some attention, by someone sitting in front of a computer thinking he is more relevant than he really is. Oh by the way does anyone know a good spot for gar. I use a toohbrush to coax them in and then hit them on the head with a baseball bat. It is really a new trend that is catching on.
Bird Watcher Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I've got a place over here in the lower left corner that is lights out on fly rod carp and buffalo. all you want, every time, all summer. Come on down Chain Pickerel, I'll show you where. I might even fish with you. The old man has been wanting to smoke some buffalo and can some carp.

Have seen a few in the back of Schooner in April/May, assumed maybe they came in during the high water of 2008 when somebody lost their fish pond.
Sam Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Relevant to not much of anything - one of my best lure colors for crappie, at times, is orange. An orange swimming minnow with maybe a little bit of red on it. I never thought much about why, just knew that color often works on crappie real well. Then I read on a crappie fishing board that baby carp are a favorite food of crappie. Since carp, goldfish, and koi are about the same thing - a lot of carp are colored orange when they're minnows. That makes sense, and I learned something.
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Ditto on the Koi. Have seen a few in the back of Schooner in April/May, assumed maybe they came in during the high water of 2008 when somebody lost their fish pond. The one I saw was on the east side of Indian. I hooked a carp, about 5 pounds, and when I brought him to the net the Koi was following him. There's a rig called a Hair Rig that is about 95% effective on hooking carp, and it uses a single hook. Corn popular and effective and you don't need to drill holes. Use canned or frozen sweet corn or soaked field corn. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

But like I said the reason I use the hard kernal with the drilled hole is so the blue gills and turtles cant get it off. That way your bait is never blank, ever. I used to use the soft canned stuff but like I said before the little boogers are all over it before the carp get around to seeing it. Results in way more fish due to never having to reel in to check if the bait is gone. I also used to use a single hook but once I switched to trebles my hook up ratio more than tripled.
