I wouldn't tie a trout fly on a stainless hook though. Stainless hooks are mostly made for saltwater use. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Outside Bend Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Thanks for the help...Why not stainless for trout? or bluegill or what not? danger to fish and birds? The big thing about stainless is they don't corrode in freshwater- if they become embedded in fish (or other critter's) flesh, they become a permanent fixture. <{{{><
flytyer57 Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 What OB said. Plus, why spend the extra money for stainless when the bronzed hooks work just as well for trout, bluegill, and what not. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
esox niger Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 Yeah I think I may be changing over to "bronzed". looks like I will have to start buying my hooks from the UK. Gamakatsu has a nice line of Carp hooks but they are only sold in the UK. or do you have suggestions for 2x even 3x strong bornzed sizes 4-8 at least. I realy don't know alot about hooks. Im guessing they are all about the same in terms of corosion? I have to say i do love the stainless....im not big on fine points like drying flies....they get wet i open the box a week later and what a frikn mess. good flies gone bad! and the stainless will bend out of snaggs and such quite frequently. I don't want to be killing birds and fish though, so maybe i should make the change....some of these new coatings out there might work about as well as stainless.... Working on a Carp Pack. take a look if you want. http://www.youtube.com/user/Missouriflies Missouriflies.com Online Carp Fly Store
Outside Bend Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 The Gamikatsu B10S is a great hook and it's finish is a little more durable than your standard bronzed hook. They only make them down to size 6 though. The Mustad 3366 is another great, strong hook with a bronze finish, it's cheap, and they make them down to a size 10. You could also look into some of the extra-short, strong egg/glo ball hooks. Or venture into tube flies if you're feeling brave <{{{><

Gavin Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I'd look for 2x strong chemically sharpened hooks....Dai Riki 730 is a good one...so is the 810....similar to the Gammy B10S...Investigate the Mustad Signature Series as well...Hard to get what you want in that line though.....Seems that I order a couple hundred...and maybe a third come in after a month or so....Then I try again. Good hooks...but hard to obtain. Cheers.
