Has anyone used CDC feathers for wet flies?

Posted

Yep- I've used them on caddis emergers and the like. They look pretty cool in the water, trap a lot of little air-bubbles that may or may not imitate the gases in an ascending caddis pupae. I'm not sure they bring more fish to the net, but they do look nice.

Thanks,

- Do you tie them in at the tip or the shaft?

- Do you have any favorite color combinations/recipes?

I usually tie the feathers in by the tip, or cut the feather fibers from the shaft and spin them in a dubbing loop. I don't have any particular patterns, I typically use them as a soft hackle feather, and have had success with olive, orange, and cream bodies.

A Google search for "CDC Nymphs" and "CDC Wet Flies" came up with quite a few patterns you could check out.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I have a few nymphs that I tie with CDC. I agree that they create a cool effect but I'm not too sure if they catch more fish. I cut the fibers off the shaft, split my thread, throw the fibers in that and wrap it up like that. The picture here is a couple from Loren Williams.

Well I gave it a try with a CDC Golden Hare's Ear Wet. I don't know if it will work but it looks fishy.

That's sexy!

Sorry, I kinda get excited when I see good looking flies.

I would definately fish that.

Thanks. I can't wait to try it out. I'm also thinking about tying it on a size 8 with a beadhead for bluegill. I think it would catch one or two over the beds during the spawn.
