ozark trout fisher Posted April 11, 2011 Author Posted April 11, 2011 Awesome report. We r heading down to the Current this weekend for our annual spring trip to try and hit the caddis hatch. Did u see any caddis coming off anywhere?I can't wait to get down there! I miss that river terribly... The caddis were very few and far between. I was really surprised at how few bugs of any sort came off over the weekend, even in the late evening when something almost always comes off. But it may well be different in a couple days. The fish were feeding actively, it was just about all subsurface though.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Chance, you boys don't get carried away Sat. night. I'll be over to Tan Vat Sunday morning, maybe the Jedi will go along too. We'll be there probably after you guys, if you start early. Going to be chilly Sat. night. You guys will have 'antifreeze' going though...;)Should pull in TV around 6:30 or so. Lucky OK boys... It's not sat night that we have to worry about, Its fri night after we get there. I personally don't take part in the adult beverages but my fishing buddies have been known to put a few back. This coupled with getting up early sat morning and spending all day on the river, usually ends with an early sat night. My buddies r troopers though, they get up early and r ready to fish...after some good BLACK camp coffee. Hopefully we see ya down there, I'm gonna try some tactics this weekend and see what I come up with. Gonna spend sat evening with a box of streamers and my 7 wt, try to bring a toad to the net. Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Nortrad Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Sounds good, going after the big boy or girl with big flies. The Jedi wants to try the N. Fork, so I guess I posted too early. But, if his wifey denies the request, we'll be down, or I'll be down for sure. If not, good luck. I know you guys will do well, with nice pics to post I'm sure. Water might be up and off-color, depending on how Thursday/Thursday night goes, which should help.
Idylwilde Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 I went to Baptist Camp at 10:30 am on Sunday, and wadded down stream for 2 miles. The first 300 yards below the put in was pretty good with 4 Rainbows taking an egg pattern (Tri Color). Then I had only three more bows in the rest of the hike. The thing that has me worried is I only had one brown and he was only 6" long. Then on the up stream return I was without a take until I got back to within sight of the access. This was a very unusual day to say the least. I tried mergers, scuds. crackle backs, and egg patterns, but only the egg pattern would raise a fish. I only saw one brief hatch and that was caddis. No surface action at all. On the way back I talked to four anglers and they mirrored what I had done, all small rainbows and all within a short distance from the put in. In the past years I have never fished that section without at least three of four brown's and all good sized. All but one of the bows were in the shoots going into the holes. 3' to 5' deep swift water. The biggest Bow was in the lower end of a hole in 1' or less. I did see some small bows chase the egg pattern but not act like they wanted it. I was using a 7X tippet and by the color of the water I would have thought could have used a 5X. I fished the under cut banks and banks, around rocks, under trees, everywhere That browns like to hide. I front was coming in and the temp was 86 degrees with a south wind at about 25mph. No canoes, or disturbing events were going on. I guess that is why they call it fishing and not catching. But the lack of brown trout kind of makes me wonder, (What's up with that?) Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.

Gavin Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Nice reports...the fish are still there.....but mid-day, sunny & windy and youll usually swear that there are no brown trout in that river...They just dont eat often then. Fly selection matters too...Rainbows love eggs...Browns...not so much. Cheers.
ozark trout fisher Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 The problem is fixed. Pics are up.

Looks like the Jedi got the go ahead and we are hitting the N. Fork on Sunday, canoe, stop, wade, fish, repeat, ROLF to Patrick Bridge. Gearing up, only my 3rd try at this great river, was a big-time padawan then, now, we shall see if the Force is strong in this one...Good luck and post some nice pics like you always do.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Right on buddy. I'm praying this line of storms doesnt blow the river out. We got a good amount of rain in a very short time when it came through. The river has plenty of room to come up as far as the CFS goes, I have fished it at 190cfs before and it was awesome. Just hope it doesn't completely swamp that valley which it probably will. Definitely will be watching the USGS stream gauge all day tomorrow.... Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
