Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 18, 2011 Root Admin Posted April 18, 2011 Put in at Indian Point Ramp this morning at 6:30 am. Headed up Little Indian and worked some cuts for crappie. Found a pod of them on a gravel bank- they were from 6 to 15 feet off the bank in 5 to 10 feet of water. Caught them on smoke and chartreuse swimming minnows, 1/16th oz heads. We worked other cuts both in Little and Big Indian and didn't find them schooled together- just one here and there. Caught 2 whites- both males. Caught LM, K's and SM. ALL of the crappie we caught had spawned out completely. The whites had not. We ended up with 2 whites and 29 crappie. Didn't have to measure any- all from 11-15 inches. These are the kinds of banks we fished for the crappies.
denjac Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Phil, think those fish were all spawned out or did you catch all males. White crappies males turn dark during the spawn. I was musing this the other day. Heres a picture of a white crappie male during the spawn . What do you think ? Male white crappie are only distinguishable from the females during the spawn when they take on the darker spawning colors... Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 18, 2011 Author Root Admin Posted April 18, 2011 They were dark and all probably males but had no sperm sacks. Could it be they haven't spawned yet? I didn't have a temp gage so I don't know what the water temp was.

Sat. and Sun it was 55-58 degrees in that area. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. aftersh0ck Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 curious if the females were still around in deeper water out from the males or already headed for the channels.
Jason Essary Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Lilley, glad to see you in my neck of the woods. Just got back from fishing. caught around 30 whites, still full of eggs, some males were milking when we brought them in. water temp was 60.5 to 61 right at dusk. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 19, 2011 Author Root Admin Posted April 19, 2011 We looked for whites in the back of coves- found 2 males. That's the first time I've been in Indian in 15 years.
