There are certainly a lot of good people who like to go gambling. If that is what makes them happy; cool. No problem. There are plenty of places within reasonable driving distance of Springfield to go gambling. How many Taneycomo lakes are there within reasonable driving distance of Springfield? I have no problem with people who want to go gamble, I don't try to stop them or any way mess with their past time. Why do they have to mess with my past time, fishing, by trying to build a casino on Taney.

There is a certain amount of 'red light district' that goes along with casions. A lot of people who like to gamble don't indulge in these activities but at the same time they don't want them in their back yards. So I have to ask if they don't want it in theirs why are we wrong for not wanting it in ours?

so has any body caught any fish?????

Yep. I caught several a couple of days ago. Had a good time too.

I would rather be fishin'.

Guess I just cant read, and I am just holding up for alot good people who happen to like to gamble, really I could care less if they get gambling or not.I didnt want the landing to come in but i guess it did create alot of decent paying jobs.

Fishing is kinda like gambling,it can be addictive, you can spend alot of money doing it,and you can come up with nothing.....................

Nobody who knows much about this area thinks the Herschends don't give a lot to charities and community stuff around here...money they don't HAVE to give away. That's not in question, Phil. We're talking about GAMBLING. And their actions on this issue are way less than "Christian" in this regard. Furthermore, they notoriously underpay their employees and we all know it. And I'm not just talking about unskilled amusement park workers! I know people who work for them in administrative capacities all the way up the organizational chain there. You can't underpay full-time staff that have been with you for years and claim to be "pro-family" and "generous" without drawing some valid criticism. But this whole country underpays working class folks. It's gotten disgusting. You and I both know managers of considerable businesses in this community who make annual salaries that fall below or at the national poverty level. That's disgusting. When America was "great," a man could be the manager or even asst. manager of a hardware store or restaurant and support a family. A decent auto mechanic could support a family. Look around, people. None of that works anymore. Yet, profit-taking by owners and shareholders have to go up every quarter or some of those workers and managers lose their jobs. We are destroying the free market capitalist society we claim to love by attacking its foundation: the working and lower middle classes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: put a competitive alternative to the casino on the table and I'll vote against the casino. But two values I hold higher than any qualms I might have with legalized gambling are: people having jobs that actually provide for families and people being free to choose what they want to do. I spoke to my 75 year old holiness movement saint of a mother about this yesterday. She says she would not oppose legalized gambling, nudist resorts, or adult PPV movies at the hotels (morality issues we frequently deal with here in this area) here. She said she would oppose strip joints, but not Hooter's, etc. She has had her fair share of loved ones who were alcoholics, but she does not oppose alcohol sales/consumption...even in public. And ALL of these things are subjects I have heard here teach and preach the dangers of all of her life. But she said it's not her job to keep free adults from doing as they please. As a Christian, it is her job to help those who hurt themselves or are hurt by others. It is her job to point out the dangers of letting ANYTHING get out of control in your life. It is her job to tell them Jesus can help them. I thought that was a pretty wise Christian position, myself.

And yes...I have seen just as much damage done to souls, finances, relationships, and the environment by HUNTING AND FISHING as I have seen from gambling, alcohol, legal prostitution, or legal porn. Now, the development issue is a different story! This is the biggest threat to the environment and hunting and fishing in America today. But the Branson waterfront and the Rockaway waterfront have been developed for over 50 years! RE-developing them doesn't harm nature. I oppose development of previously undeveloped waterfront on Taneycomo. That makes good sense. But redeveloping a downtown waterfront that has been steel, wood, and concrete for the better part of a century is not harming anything that wasn't harmed a long time ago.

First of all, forget about Riverboat Gambling. This is a short term "foot in the door" concept. The Casinos want a land based facility, and they will get a land based facility as they have in most of the casinos built in Missouri. The Boat in Moat concept is the way the industry in MO has been established. Build a floating casino floor as required to meet the gaming laws and build all required Hotel rooms, shops and resturants required to support the visiters on the site ajacent to the casino floor.

Community impact.

The local community will get some. Most of this will be spent building the roads and inferstructure to get folks to the casino. Some will help the surrounding inferstructure helping the community.

Jobs. The casino will require a stable of employees to keep the machine in operation 24/7. Many of these will be good paying jobs, not all. Most of the better paying jobs will go to folks relocating to the community. The poor folks that currently live in the community might get some of the lesser paying service oriented jobs. But let's face it, many of the poor stay poor due to lack of education and skills. This isn't going to change. The skilled help that the casinos need will be imported as required to fill the positions.

Local Businesses.

These folks will feel a slight bump, what is needed to support the stable of casino employees and their families. Very few dollars from the casino patrons will be spent in the community. The casino will have all the shops and resturants required to keep the patrons in or near the casino gambling. It's in the casinos best interest to do so, and they know how to get $$ from their customers.

Schools.

The schools will get some $$, but this will be spent building the inferstructure required to take care of the casino emplyees families.

Social impact.

Don't look for an increase in crime anymore than would come with added population. The casinos are huge in security. They need their customers to feel safe coming to and from the casino and will see that they are. Some people in the community will over indulge, but not most.

Most of the $$ that enters the community and spent in the casino will leave the community and have little or no impact other than as mentioned. If currently live in the community, don't look for the casino to have an impact on your financial welbeing unless you own the land that they need to build.

kickinbass: I agree with most of what you say except the security part. You are right that casinos are big on security, but only their own. The rest of the community has to fend for theirselves, so it is the crime outside the casino that I am talking about.

1) Will the casino be floating on the water taking up fishing space?

2) I go to Rockaway frequently to fish/eat.

Why don't they try to bring in Some kind of manufacturing facility?

Usually good pay with steady work. They will need high school diploma people and college grads to work there. A large, untapped workforce is one of the key elements in getting a company to build a new factory.

Not necessarily in Rockaway, but in the area.

Maybe this has been tried.

3) If forum members want to talk about businesses paying too low of wages, they should start a new thread to put their communist ideas. Topic is about a riverboat on Taneycomo.
