Wayne SW/MO Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 I'm not sure that I understand #3, but I don't know that its wages as much as it is year long wages and some benefits. Any company that considers a location for a manufacturing facility, needs to things to even consider it, a work force that has some similar experience, and a reasonable path to raw materials, not to mention a good route in and out of the location. Taney county has none of these. Its not just Rockaway that would benefit from any financial gains that might be afforded the local people, its much larger than that, in fact Rockaway couldn't staff it if children were employed. Outside money? Trust me the Landing and the large housing addition on the west side of SDC aren't using any local money. The people who have an investment in Rockaway would like a chance for a return. The people here pay extra taxes to enhance Branson's appeal to tourist, but are basically told that, even though they are over 10 miles away, Branson doesn't want anything that might pull money away from their investors. I don't know that Rockaway and Ozark Beach get their fair share of fish, because the hatchery won't say! Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 31, 2006 Root Admin Posted July 31, 2006 "I don't know that Rockaway and Ozark Beach get their fair share of fish, because the hatchery won't say!" But Wayne- I thought lower Taney was the best kept secret bass fishing lake around... trout should be a bonus, not a right. Should it? And they only get trout as long as the surface water temp is cold enough. I'm not belittling the lower lake at all... I think their fishery is under rated and under promoted. But I've heard locals want it that way.
gonefishin Posted July 31, 2006 Author Posted July 31, 2006 This discussion has kind of danced around what I really wanted to discuss. I wasn't really as interested in the moralitys of gambling so much as the impact of more major commercial construction on Taney. I would rather be fishin'. Brian Sloss Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Boy has this discussion has degraded, people are implying others are communists. Awful heated debate for a fishing forum. I've seen some below the belt posts on this thread. ...and I mean below the belt on both sides. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Phil I think when it comes to warmwater species, they don't want a lot of publicity, not that they wouldn't like to have the attraction, but they know the lake can't support it. "trout should be a bonus, not a right" I would take exception to that. The corp owes a respectable amount of fish to all the areas down lake. They destroyed the warm water fishery and the purpose of the hatchery is to replace it. Many here think that the truck doesn't come that often, nor stay that long. Thats what I hear, not what I know, but I do know that basically the hatchery will tell you its none of your business if you ask, and that creates some suspicion. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 31, 2006 Root Admin Posted July 31, 2006 Please don't get me wrong... I don't want this to be a "upper lake vs lower lake" thing. We sometimes feel the same way esp in the winter when we know they are stocking down there and our fishing stinks. Kinda like right now- for the month of July. But the lower lake does have bass, crappie and blue gill and we don't. We don't have anything to fall back on except may be suckers. I guess that's why I stated what I did. The lake is 23 miles long and for all practical purposes, they only made the upper lake a coldwater lake, so to speak. But I know that's debatable- and that's ok.
Terry Beeson Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 In the immortal words of Rodney King - "(sniff) Why cccan't we all (sniff, sniff) just gggget (sniff) along!" The Arkie in me will chime in with the fact that Arkie-land has fought this same issue for years. There is no lottery in Arkansas. There are no casinos in Arkansas. There is no legal gambling in Arkansas other than para-mutual betting at Oaklawn Park (horse racing) and Southland Greyhoud Park (dogs..) At one time, Hot Springs rivaled Vegas as the gambling capital of the world. The issue of "economic boom" is always used to justify the need for casino gambling and the example of Tunica County Mississippi is always noted. And if you drive through that area, you'll see wonderful roads, shops, big hotels, and happy workers because of the casinos. But the real story is the only ones who have actually had any REAL economic GAIN from them are the cotton farmers who sold the land, the local "officials", and the casino companies. OH.... and Mississippi Power and Light, of course... As for the "undesireables" you refer to as being drawn to the casino... My bet is that the only ones drawn to Taney County casinos would be an influx of little "blue haired" ladies on busses trying to figure out how to get rid of all that life insurance money they got from their dear departed hubbies... Honestly, my opinion is that the dealers and pimps would be highly disappointed and move to more familiar waters.... pardon the pun... Am I "for" casinos on Taney? No... I'd rather not have one. Am I "against" it? Honestly, I would just hope it didn't interfere with my fishing. And I don't see that happening. Disclaimer - Just my opinion, ya'll.. Wayne SW/MO Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I was below Powersite, briefly, last week and there were several people do quite well on Trout. They appeared to be in the 12" range. I don't know if the generation has drawn them in to BS or not, but I would assume any that were in there last winter would have left the dam area during the long lull in generation. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
loo10 Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 I believe God gave me free will because He didn't want me to be a robot. So I can choose to accept Him or not; Believe gambling is hurtful to my fellow man or not; Be Pro-Life...or not. I know what scripture teaches and THAT is the final authority in my life. But SilverMallard, I find it offensive when you state what makes or distinguishes a "good" Christian; Or what a "good" Christian should do and to what degree. You state you will vote for an alternative to gambling if one is presented. So you are pro gambling if it's just a yes or no decision? Fortunately for my wife, I am faithful. And it's not based on whether there's a better alternative available. kelly Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Gonefishin, you asked about the commercial construction. Here is one for you. I heard Paul Harvey this morning talking about Branson considering a monorail of some sort to connect SDC and the major shows on the strip. Is this something new or is it the same story I have heard for about ten years now about Disney coming to town. Kelly
