jdmidwest Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 What a year so far, hot, cold, hot, cold, rain, rain, rain, blowing wind. Every weekend, the same old crap, big storm comes in and weather changes on Friday and lasts all weekend. Flooding, ramps at lake closed, 30+ mph winds, etc. All spring, I have only pulled off 2 decent fishing days. Once in Feb. on the Spring River and another in early April also on the Spring River. Bought a tube of crickets last Friday on the way home from work, backed up to the boat, and got ready to fish Sat. morning at local lake. Got up next morning, it was raining hard and wind was gusting at 25 mph, no way was I getting out on that lake by myself in the jon boat. Sunday was full doing other stuff. Got out today after work to fish local pond for gills. Original plan was to take a friends kids out to drown those crickets at the local lake, but rain and a forgotten practice made him cancel. I made it to the pond instead and started to line up. Black gnats were pestering the hell out of me, flying into my eyes, ears, and nose. It made me feel like Alaska on a bad windless day. Just got ready to cast the first cast, phone rang. It was the other half, car would not start. Back to the truck, off to the shop, pick up the grandkid, and out to the house with all of them. I just don't seem to be able to catch a break. Sat. May 21 2011 may come as a welcome relief, since I have been thru fishing hell all season. Maybe the end of the world will bring some relief and I can finally go fishing. But they are calling for rain and wind. jdmidwest Posted May 20, 2011 Author Posted May 20, 2011 Summer is coming...gonna be too hot to go fishing. Maybe for some of us..... For the good ones, heavenly weather. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Kayser Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Summer = summer class in Rolla = wet wading coldwater. It's gonna be a good summer. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
ozark trout fisher Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 I'm looking forward to the summer and improved stream fishing conditions. But I have had some excellent fishing this year so far, some of the best I've had. Mostly it has been stillwater fly fishing, but as a rule that has been awesome. The lake right by my house is still nice and clear and the fish are biting really well. I actually love fishing in the rain. There is just something about the stillness of it that somehow makes it special. I got out today for a few hours and the fishing was quite good despite (or because of) the weather. I caught green sunfish, redear, small bass, the whole deal- all on a #10 Olive Woolly. Fun stuff.
jdmidwest Posted May 20, 2011 Author Posted May 20, 2011 This weekend looks great, severe thunderstorms Sat., thunderstorms and 30mph winds Sun. Rain every day next week thru Thurs. A nice calm gentle rain would be great if fishing on a lake. But around here, everytime I try to get out there is wind and thunder with it. I don't like to swing a rod in an aluminum boat on an open lake during a thunderstorm with lightening. stlfisher Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Gotta say the fishing has been tough to come be for me. Every weekend i have been able to go the streams have been blown out. Finally, caved and took last friday off to fish....streams still quite high. Was going to go Tuesday, but on the way to the lake my mom called and was in the emergency room...she fell and broke her ankle. Busted my hump Wednesday and Thursday this week so I could hit the pond after work yesterday. Forecast was mid 70's, cloudy, and light wind. Was geared for some topwater bluegill and bass action. Despite the forecast it rained all day, never got above 62, and the wind was blowing. That little blob of precip stayed over the area all day. Was hoping to go Sunday, but just found out my girlfriend's grandma is very sick and won't make it through the day. Off to Farmington tonight and then home for a bit tomorrow for my nephew's birthday and to give my mome a ride over. Back to Farmington tomorrow night and most of Sunday. It has been an eventful week and spring to say the least. I am ready for a vacation.
Members Dan Sweeney Posted May 20, 2011 Members Posted May 20, 2011 I've gotten in some good days so far, but that's largely because I am derilect in all the normal, grown up responsibilities. I'm not above dropping what should be done in order to go fishing instead. Probably ought to work on that, but likely never will. Silence is golden.

Need to mow the yard, but that is what weekdays are made for. Heading out early in the morning to meet a friend on a small lake up north at daylight. Looks like some nasty weather may blow in. We did the same trip in the fall during the teal season and I had to drive thru a nasty thunderstorm. He busted thru several treetops getting in from his side that had blew over. I almost run over a blue heron hunting the stream of water running over the road on my side. Did I mention it was a major paved highway the heron was on? Good thing I strapped the boat down good, I think it would have floated off the trailer if I had not done it. We ended up napping in the truck till the storm passed and then hit the lake to hunt for a while. After we realized there were no ducks, we dropped the blind and fished. I don't think we ever caught a fish that morning. But it beats sitting home. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
