Members Adam Snodgrass Posted May 22, 2011 Members Posted May 22, 2011 I fished upstream from Baptist today (5/21) for about 4 hours, starting at about 11 am. Hooked up within the first 10 minutes in deep spot underneath the big tree that stretches across the river. This one broke away, but I landed a rainbow pretty quick in the same spot and another about the same size (10-12" maybe) just a little upstream. Later I caught my first ever brownie, which was pretty cool even though he was smaller than the two rainbows. I used pretty much the same rig all day...hare's ear soft hackle (size 16) with a brown wooly bugger (size 10 or 12) trailing under that. All the fish went for the bugger. I thought about replacing the hare's ear with something else but didn't want to waste time re-tying everything and I figured - why mess with what's working. Thanks to Gavin and Nortad for your helpful advice. It helped me land a few nice fish and have a great day on the river. I'll attach a couple photos. Adam

Nortrad Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 You are welcome. A lot of guys have really helped me be successful on the Current. I'm logging off to hit the road for Sunday fishing. Hopefully I can post a good report tonight.
Al Agnew Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Five of us were there Saturday as well. My fly fishing buddy from Montana was fishing below Tan Vat and cicadas were starting to show up on the water. He didn't have a good cicada imitation but caught three browns from 17-19 inches on a big dry fly after seeing them rise to cicadas. I went upstream from Tan Vat, and saw only one fish rise to a cicada, but caught 15 rainbows on streamers (surprised I couldn't catch a brown). A friend who went upstream with me caught a half dozen fish on nymphs. We all started out using streamers, but I was the only one who stuck with them, the other two guys caught several fish apiece on nymphs.
Kayser Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 This is the report I've been waiting for since about March. Time for me to head back to Rolla and start fishing cicadas! Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Gavin Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Sounds like fun....There are tons of rainbows in the water below the park right now...hard to tie into a brown right now, but a big bushy dry fly sounds like the way to go for awhile. Hitting the road on business this week...but were planning to head down for the Troutbust at Ozark Mountain Ranch, June 3-5.

Hey Gavin, Jim, one of the organizers gave me the pitch for the bash that weekend. Met him in the parking lot at Tan Vat. Sounds like a good time for a good cause.
Gavin Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Jim's a great guy...and you'll get more than your $50 worth...$50 a person covers camping, food, & live music...and the food is very good....Jim heads the kitchen crew and he is a trained chef. No need to cook, just camp, fish, & party...Think they had around 150 people there last fall and it was a really good time!
