As you & I continue to open our deep pockets for this disaster, that crisis, or the next whatever catastrophe, please keep these facts in mind: The American Red Cross: President and CEO - Marsha J. Evans salary for the year 2010 was $651,957 plus all personal, medical, & pension expenses. Less than 10 cents of your donated dollar actually goes to the cause. The United Way: President - Brian Gallagher receives a $375,000 base salary, along with numerous personal & family expense benefits. Less than 12 cents of your donated dollar actually goes to the cause. UNICEF: CEO - Caryl M. Stern receives $1.2 Million per year (100k per month) plus all living & housing expenses, including a ROLLS ROYCE. Less than 15 cents of your donated dollar actually goes to the cause. The Salvation Army: Commissioner - Todd Bassett receives a salary of only $13,000 per year (plus housing) for managing this $2 billion dollar organization. 96 cents of all donated dollars go to the cause

I'm not arguing for or against any specific charity, but according to this ==> About.com Urban Legends on Charities Salaries these numbers are not accurate. Also, according to the Better Business Bureau, Red Cross used 90% of its funds towards its programs vs. 6% administrative and 4% fundraising expenses in 2008 (BBB.org American Red Cross). CharityNavigator.org says Red Cross puts 92.1% of its funds towards programs , United Way of Kansas City 91.5% of funds towards programs, United Way of St. Louis 90.5% of funds towards programs. Again, I'm not saying these are the best options for charities in general or for Joplin tornado relief, just that I'm pretty skeptical that American Red Cross, United Way, and UNICEF are as bad as indicated above. timsfly Posted June 21, 2011 Author Posted June 21, 2011 Hi, I live in S.W. Missouri, some of you know me, if you watch any news at all you will have seen how badly Joplin Missouri was tore up by last weeks tornado, I have a rod company that is considering donating a rod for me to auction off or raffle off to make some money for the joplin tornado relief fund, now here is my questions, what will make the most money, auction or raffle, and whom should I give the money to, the red cross ? the Convoy of Hope, they say each $ given is worth 7 and they have been a big help so far, or is there another group I should look into, any advice will be read and appreciated, thank you. I can get about 7 fly shops involved in the raffle, maybe more, I thought maybe selling tickets for 5$ each for a month period ? And then having some kid draw out a name or ticket ? Ok I have the rod now, it is a 7'9" 2pc Quad 4/5 wt Sweetgrass bamboo fly rod, this was given to me to raffle off for the recovery efforts continuing in Joplin Missouri, 5$ per chance, 20$ gets you 5 chances, all precedes will go to Convoy of Hope, I hope this rod will raise some money for the people in Joplin.
