Good morning all! My family and I will be heading down to Bennett next weekend. I was looking for a good spot for my kids to fish. This will be their first time with their new flyrods from Christmas. They have been practicing thru the spring in the field across the street and at a local park pond. They are doing great but I wouldn’t want to put them to close to anyone. Im not real familier with Bennett. Is there a suitabel spot that’s not to deep, plenty of space and hopefully plenty of fish. I know…this place doesn’t exist..he,he!!!

Thanks Guys!!

Get em set up right below the spillway dam. Plenty of room, gradual slope and lots of fish. My dad started me there, I started my kids there and in a couple years I'll get my grandson going there.

It's funny how a little kid waving a fly rod around can clear an area pretty quick.

Weavers fly shop has a report every week and they'll hook you up with the fly of the day. Can't go wrong with eggs and worms though.

Good luck

Thanks for the info Pete. Is the spillway dam the tall dam where people stand on top of and fish away from the bridge? Im sorry, I dont know the names of the spots very well. Is there a map of the stream that shows the names of the spots and holes? This would be real helpful.

Im going to look up Weavers shop on the net. Im sure they have a website.

Once again, thanks Pete!

It can get crowded below the dam. I would check out the Long hole, anywhere between the hatchery outlet and the whistle. It has a nice straight forward slope into the water and a long and reasonably clear back cast area. I would try to get close to the whistle if possible.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Thanks Wayne, I will check this out as well. I have fished this point and up before but never down to the whistle.

Long Hole is set up good IF there's not many people. Gotta constantly watch out behind ya if your casting for little kids and people walking behind ya. I've even had adults bring their lawn chairs and plop down behind me. I started both my boys out below the little falls up in zone 1. Usually not near as much "traffic" to watch out for. Main thing is your taking kids fishin! Have fun. We're headin down there the end of June for 10 days. Can't wait.

Since the water is still up a little high, the current below the rock dam in zone1 may be too fast for kids to learn - they will have to deal with prety fast current. Also, the water will be a litle deeper than normal so they will have to stand closer to the shore, which means more backcast issues with trees and spectators.

I agree that the long hole in zone2 is the best place for kids to gain experience, with a shallow easy sloping bottom, and lots of room to cast with a moderate current.

I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."

Probably right with high water. Guess I was thinking about what it was like whenI taught my kids rather than what the water is like now. Just watch out for peopl behind ya in long hole. Seen more that a few get snagged on a backcast.
