Members Hef Posted June 27, 2011 Members Posted June 27, 2011 Heading to the Buffalo later this week and was wondering what would be some good baits to take with me to try and fool some Smallmouths into biting? Any help would be much appreciated. I know it's cheating but do any of you use live crawdads on the river? Thank you
hoglaw Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 a split shot, circle hook, and live crawdad will catch all the fish you want to catch. Please use a circle hook though.
drew03cmc Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Grab some Rebel Crawdad crank baits, and soft plastic craws with 1/8oz jighead. You will catch all the brownies you want if you present it in the right spot. Andy
Al Agnew Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Lots of stuff works. Assuming you're floating, and assuming the water is clear, the soft plastics that you have to fish slowly on the bottom might not be the best choice unless you plan on getting out of the canoe at every good spot...fishing such lures from the canoe isn't easy. And as most on here know, I only go to the slow-moving stuff when I'm forced to, anyway. So what I'd be sure and have along to fish from the canoe are some smallish buzzbaits. They can be great in clear water on the Buffalo.

darbwa Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Al, Is your recommendation to avoid the slow water but throw the small buzz baits when you have to fish in slow water?
Danoinark Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Caught several Saturday on gitzit's in gray and also pumpkinseed colors. The smaller 2 inch size seemed to work better than the 3 1/2 inch ones. Fish the deep holes slow. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

Big smallies aren't afraid of them and small ones inhale them. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I have grown to really like the 2" tube baits over even 2.5". Big smallies aren't afraid of them and small ones inhale them. And then they bleed. The term tubes baits are deadly is more reality than it should be. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
