How's it goin' everyone? I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when an old buddy of mine asked me if I wanted to come and fish the Big Piney River in Missouri with him this weekend. I have never fished this river before, but I have heard nothing but good about it. We will be putting in at Boiling Spring and taking out at Slabtown, a 14-mile float. Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or advice you could offer me for this stretch of the river?

Thanks! As always I appreciate it!

Thats a nice float and the fishing is good. Zoom Superflukes in baitfish colors were the hot ticket on our last visit to the BP. Used up everyone we had in about 6 hours of fishing. Your mileage may vary...The usually suspects should work well too. Hope you have a great trip.

What I would use depends a great deal on river conditions that day. Generally if the water is murky go with a spinner bait or a loud crank bait like a wiggle wart. If the water is clearish I would use a 4" worm or a small crawfish crankbait like a bandit 200. Buzzbaits and Sammys are great too. Let the fish tell you what should use, I would fish topwater until 10 am then

switch to flukes, small crank baits, or a 4" inch worm.

I've had some of my best days smallmouth fishing ever in that general area of the Big Piney. I've done well on Rebel Craws and Rooster tails.

I can't speak for the stretch of river you are going to fish specifically, but I've been fishing the Piney the last few days near the Fort. This morning the topwater bite was on pretty good, several nice fish on buzz bait and a spook. Once the sun came up I switched to a 3 inch brown grub that was really working well, when it slowed down I switched it up to a big chompers tube bait (I think around 3" also), also brown. I have been trying to cast the rebel cranks but not really producing as well as the grubs and tube baits. Get out there early, I was out there at 5am this morning and by 7am the top water bite had slowed significantly. Good Luck, let us know how you did.

Ok guys here's the follow up-

We got out on the water around 5:30 and fished the stretch around boiling spring for about an hour. We caught some nice smallies on buzzbaits below a riffle just up from the boat ramp and managed to catch some nice google eye on grubs off of a big slab rock. Just like Flatbottom Boy said, the topwater bite was pretty much done after 7am, so I started fishing a jig and craw and my buddy started fishing a broken back rebel. My jig and craw seemed to be the hot bait and I caught pretty nice smallies and largemouths and a few goggle eye here and there up until 11 am when the fishing seemed to stop dead. The fishing was definitely more quantity over quality this trip, which is perfectly fine with me. I think we all agree that fishing isn't necessarily about the results. I had a great time floating this river and was very impressed by the natural beauty of it, especially up around the boiling spring area. I'll definitely be taking more trips to float the Piney.

Sounds like a great trip. Thanks for the report.
