HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I'm interested in learning a bit about Pommes muskie population and fishing. Not looking for anything like spots or what to use just wondering how many fish the lake actually holds and if the fishery is viable for a flyfishing excursion. I realize this time of year probably isn't conducive to muskies on the fly but a buddy and myself are seriously interested in planning a trip to take place this fall. If anyone has any experience or knowledge they're willing to share I'd sure appreciate it , Thanks......Jeff http://highplainsflyfisher.blogspot.com/

HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted July 6, 2011 Author Posted July 6, 2011 Thanks for posting the link , some good information on there but from looking at the numbers it doesn't make me want to plan an entire trip around catching a Missouri muskie. Thanks again......Jeff http://highplainsflyfisher.blogspot.com/
bluebasser86 Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I've been to Canada and Minnesota trying to catch a Muskie but every muskie I've ever caught came from MO. I've only fished for them twice at Pomme and caught one and lost one. I've been to Hazel Creek for them 3 times and caught 2 and lost another that I saw and a couple fish that I didn't see so can't say for sure they were muskies. I'm thinking that's a pretty good average for "the fish of 10,000 casts?" Planning on going back to Pomme this fall and maybe Hazel Creek too so I can try to finally get a legal sized muskie just so I can say I caught one big enough to be a keeper, even though I'd be putting it back.
HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 Thanks for that little bit of info...sounds much more promising than what I read online. I realize it won't be an easy task and the odds are against me but I'd still love to give it a go. It wouldn't be the first time I fished for two days and didn't catch any fish of the species I was after!! Thanks again.....Jeff
redbird Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 I grew up fishing Pomme for bass and white bass. The whole lake holds musky there are some good spots in the Nemo area. We always seemed to get our share of muskies, especially in the fall, when fishing for bass. They key on the same forage especailly shad and will be in the same areas. You could definately have a good day fly fishing for both on Pomme in the fall. And the more foul the weather the better. I got bit by the fly a few years ago and have had it in the back of my mind to get back down to Pomme and throw some big streamers and see what I could do. Maybe I will bump into you. I am from the KC area too. Id be happy to answer any other Pomme questions you may have. Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.
Members cpcunningham Posted August 4, 2011 Members Posted August 4, 2011 Missouri has some areas with pretty good catch rates for muskie but not much for size (there are big fish but overall its lacking). I'm not a fly fisherman so I don't know how good Missouri's muskie reservoirs would be for that. I've spent some time muskie fishing rivers in central Tennessee that look like carbon copies of Ozark streams except they're loaded with muskie. Super shallow riffles so we use canoes and kayaks and I know of people fly fishing for them there. That's where I would go to fly fish for muskies.
HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 RedBird - thanks for the information. I'm definitely gonna plan a trip down there this fall and give it a go. I may drop you a PM when I get ready and pick your brain a little more or even see if you're interested in making the trip down with me. Thanks again. At this point I'd be happy with any size muskie for starters. Catching muskies on small streams and rivers like that would be a hoot though I bet...someday. Thanks again......Jeff http://highplainsflyfisher.blogspot.com/ You should also try Fellows Lake just north of Springfield. When they shocked it, there was a large number of 35" and up muskie. Most people catch them when bass fishing. If you teach your kids to fish, your wife will let you go more often.....
