Members george77 Posted July 6, 2011 Members Posted July 6, 2011 I hammered the catfish last night on shrimp and I think it is better than liver or any other bait for catfish. What do you think? http://lake-fishing-reports.com Home to lake & ice fishing plus reports
Al Agnew Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Depends on what kind of catfish. If I fished for cats more I'd target flatheads with big live minnows or green sunfish. I'd rather use shrimp for channels just because it's a little less messy (if more smelly) than liver. Catalpa worms are better than either, though.

I think I know, but....
hoglaw Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Big juicy worms from catalpa trees that seem to be disappearing, but Trophy FishR managed to scoop up a bucket load when I saw him the other day
Chief Grey Bear Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Catalpa worms are better than either, though. I don't that there is really one bait better than the other when it comes to channel cats. They are the buzzards of the wet world. I don't know of any food source that they will turn their nose at waiting for something else. I am speaking of natural baits though. And after saying all that above, I do believe that natural baits will out preform manufactured baits. But that has just been my experience over the years. And more so with river cats. Lake cats can and do operate a little different. Actual results may vary though. drew03cmc Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 I have had my best luck on fresh chicken liver. Turkey livers are tougher, and as such, easier to keep on the hook. I don't catfish a lot, so my opinion is based solely upon a small sample size. Andy
Kayser Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Something with meat in it, smelly is better. I'm personally a cut bluegill fan- lasts through several fish, and doesn't make you want to vomit (magic bait, 3-day-in-the-sun livers). But the spot has always been more important for me than the bait. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Greasy B Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 All that nasty rotten bait is hard to deal with. When I was about 12 years old an old woman at Spanish Lake in north St Louis County taught me how to fish with a hamburger/ Limburger cheese mix. Boy it worked great but if fell from your hook on every cast. When I go cat fishing next month I’ll probably use shrimp and night crawlers just so I don’t stink so much.
