Kicknbass Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 You can buy fish gigs at fin and feather in Springfield, MO They are not as heavy as Don Bakers gigs. But they are cheap at $20 a piece I bought a few for spares. I think that Bakers gigs are well made but they are to big for the suckers that I have been in the last few years, great carp gig if you are in to that. Any of you all every used High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights?? I was thinking about changing out my halogen and tryn them, but was wanting to know if any one else has used them. Thanks in advance. I know I'm bias, but your wrong about the Baker gigs being "too big". Dad's gigs are perfect for any fish that is big enough to mess with. We seldom gig for carp, targeting yellow suckers and redhorse. Dad's gigs are tough enough to beat a hard rocky bottom and take the abuse. There is no need to buy a "few spares" I have seen those pot metal $20 gigs that are made abroad, and I bet they wouldn't last a single night, much less a season of serious gigging. I've been gigging with the same gig for about 15 years and have taken suckers from 1 lb to over 15lbs with the same gig. When you gig at a sucker, miss and hit solid rock and break a prong on one of those $20 gigs you'll wish you would had saved your money. I can see buying one of the cheap gigs to get started, but those gigs are junk. Why would you buy 2or 3 pieces of junk, when you could have a quality gig for a little more that will last you for many years? " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
Members Wildside88 Posted October 2, 2006 Members Posted October 2, 2006 I agree with you that these gigs are not nearly as well made and will not last nearly as long, and they will for sure break easier than a hand made gig. I just wish that the Baker gigs where a little smaller, if you don't head shot every fish it tears them up so much that they are a pain to clean. I have one of your dad's gigs and I expect that my great, great, great grand children will still be using it, very well constructed. Well worth the money.
Kicknbass Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I agree, Dad gigs do a number on the smaller fish. I guess I have been gigging w/ these for so long it just doesn't seam to matter. I just fillet around the gig marks and move on. When you have a tub full of suckers, and it is close to mid-night, ya just want to get the fish cleaned and get home and hit the sack. How has your season been to date this year. I still need to get my boat rigged for the season. I have been spending too much time coaching my daughters soccer team to get the boat ready. MoCarp Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 not to be a stinker but how many big smallies get giged? I am not a big fan of it due to the poaching factor in some areas-at a time of low water a stretch of river can be eliminated of its small mouths some bad apples will ruin a Ozark Tradition MONKEYS? what monkeys?

Go to previous conservation issues and read through on the topic. This was quite a hot topic last year. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
Members riverman Posted October 24, 2006 Members Posted October 24, 2006 There is another gig on the market that I have used called "The Ozark Sucker Plucker." They are made in Steelville, Mo. I bought mine at Roams Hardware in Van Buren. As for the changing of lights from Halogin. I have an 18'52" exterminator that I run two 150 watt hi densety sodium lights on. they give off more lumins than 1500 watt of halogin. I do most of my gigging on the Big Sac below the Stockton Dam or on the Spring River near Carthage, the advantage of these lights is they penetrate the cloudy water we encounter majority of the time better than the halogin lights.
MoCarp Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 hey riverman where are you located? MONKEYS? what monkeys?

Fish Bork Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 Can I run any type of good light off a battery for a night? I don't have the budget for a generator and wondering if that would work better than propane. Thanks Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
