My wife has a hankerin for the Current river.. I dunno why, exactly, but she does... She's decided that it's necessary for us to float the entire thing, at least down to Van Buren. We've already done all the stretches from Baptist all the way to powder mill at one point or another.. This next trip is Powder mill down..

Ten miles would cover both the springs as well as two creeks flowing in, and would put us down by Log Yard (according to the Paddlers guide)... I am WHOLEY unfamiliar with that stretch... Is ten miles too much? Could I cover more in one day?

My other questions to you fellas would be: Who do we call to rent a decent canoe? Its a long enough drive that I can save enough in fuel (by taking the T/A) to pay for a rental, so no use banging up my own..

Any suggestions? Thoughts?

2 Rivers Canoe Rental does floats all the way to Big Spring (which is just past Van Buren if I remember correctly). You would have to schedule your pickup time, but they do it. Sounds like a good time to me.

Ah, thanks.. Their website shows that they only put in at Two Rivers... Is that right?

Edited to add: I called and was informed that they'd do it, but I wouldn't like the price...

Don't suppose there's anyone down that way that'd be willing to come pick the wife and I (and our canoe and gear) up at LOg Yard and take us up to Powder Mill, is there? I'd be willing to pay $40....

Any takers?

Call them and ask is your best bet...they might be willing to work something out in the Monday-Thursday timeframe when they are slow...Forgetabout special arrangements in the Friday-Sunday timeframe. Good luck.

I did.. $75 bucks if I use one of their canoes, and I'd hafta be off the water by five...

My wife just needs to realize that camping is necessary to doing some of the stretches of river that she wants... I convinced her to change her mind and hit a colder section this time..

Thanks again for the suggestions!!

You and me both. Had a two day float from Pultite to Two Rivers planned with two other couples. My gf and one other backed out and now we are doing just one 12 mile float from Williams Landing to Two Rivers.

Cricket, can't help you with the rental/shuttle...I don't know why there isn't a canoe rental situated to do that float, because it's one of the prettiest floats on the whole river and the fishing can be very good. The river moves right along, and the ten miles is easily done in a day even if you are seriously fishing. Only drawback is the number of jetboats, especially on weekends, of course.

It's also difficult to find shuttle options for the stretch from Logyard to Van Buren. Plenty of canoe rentals in VB, but they all want to put in just seven miles upstream, because the shuttle from Logyard to VB is a doozy. They are more likely to agree to put you in at Powdermill than Logyard because it's a shorter shuttle by road. So, I suspect if you want to do the whole stretch from Powdermill to VB you're gonna have to do it in two or three days.

I've found that many of the canoe rentals on the Current are expensive and difficult to work with. Two Rivers is actually one of the better ones. But you might want to call some of the motels in Van Buren or Eminence, tell them you will stay with them a night, and ask them, "Oh, by the way, do you know anybody or have anybody working for you who would like to make some extra bucks doing a shuttle for us the next morning?" I've gotten some cheap shuttles that way, and in the winter it's about the only way to get a shuttle. That's assuming, of course, that you will use your own boat.

So she's decided to do Akers to Pulltite on Wednesday (or possibly next Wednesday)...

Any suggestions?
