I'm from up in KC and looking to start getting down to the NFoW and Bryant Creek to enjoy some trout and smallie fly fishing. I'm an avid backpacker and would love to do an overnight float and camp along the water 1 night. If I stop and fish plenty during the day, how high up should I go to get a good 1.5 day trip in? Is Bryant even long enough to do an overnight float? Also, what are typical rates for shuttle service? I have my own canoe and yak's so I'm only needing to be hauled up river and dumped off. Thanks for any info!

Pettits' and dawt charge around $25 to shuttle. I have used both this year. Prices have gone up since last year. A good 1.5 day trip would be hammond camp to dawt mill. The first few miles are warm water but after that trout all the way down.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

Amy and Justin Spencer, at Sunburst Ranch will treat you right. You could do Hammond to Sunburst, about 10 miles, in a day and a half if you fish it hard.

I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.

I'd recommend Sunburst....Hammond to Sunburst, or James would make a good overnighter..James to Dawt is probably the ugliest stretch of that river thanks to all the developement at North Fork Ranch...Fish smallmouth on day one and camp up around the Springs at the head of the trout water....break camp & float down early in the AM before the day floaters get on the water..The Bryant offers more solitude and its very scenic in its own right...small water, big bluffs.... but there are several low water bridges to portage and it gets very low this time of year...There are a few trout on the Bryant as well...a couple miles up above Bell Bridge(95) where Spring Creek comes in. The trout are escapee's from Rockbridge.

Just did a big stretch of this while staying at River of Life Farms last week. You probably already know, but I STRONGLY discourage you from doing this trip on a weekend. All sorts of "interesting" people out there on a Saturday. Let's just say this, we could have gotten a buzz off the full beer cans we recovered from the river!

Thanks for the tips! Sadly I'm a weekend warrior as well so I guess I'll have to be ready for combat... unless anyone has other secret rivers they know of in the ozarks with good fishing and solitude! So is portaging on Bryant a problem year round? I'm actually most excited to fish in the late fall/winter so I hope crowds aren't a porblem then.
