snap Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 ...two sheds...I am familiar with that campsite also...one of my favorites except that the one I referred to allows me to walk a larger area to wade and fish without floating...both are on high ground...I think yours might have more of the sound of rapids in the background...which is great for sleeping!!!And you are correct....there are many gravel bars that make great sites for camping...my last trip the first week of August was meant to explore for more gravel bars that also provided wading access to fish...we found one below Turner and another one below Whiten that would allow us to wade long stretches of the river and fish without floating. We have been boated in, dropped off, and spent 5-7 days at the same site the last two Memorial Days...great times on the greatest river!!!
2sheds Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 Snap - Not sure I recognize the exact spot you describe below Turner Mill. Assume you mean BETWEEN Turner and Horseshoe Bend ? I'll be sure to look for it and check it out though my next time through in July 2007. Below Whitten I recall a nice sandy landing with a long shallow bank on the left side of the river that made for a great spot to wade fish the opposite shaded shore. I suspect this would be a gravel bar with water at its normal level. Wonder if that's your spot ? Caught my largest rainbow of the trip in that run on a MOAT stonefly with 3 jumbo tungsten beads that still zoomed downstream in less than 10 seconds. Twosets (if that's really your name) - Dig the closeup on those rocks. Well, maybe those actually are rocks - I'll have to check my negatives, but I seem to remember eating trout at some point that morning. And here's the before picture. I hooked this one down into the gullett and didn't feel confident he'd make it if I released him. Also, it was almost breakfast time. PS - For purposes of comparison, the blue plastic bucket lid in the background measures only 24" across. Concerning the second of the sheds, I would much rather focus on the topic of breakfast. That, and these 2 nice people I met on the river. And I'll bet my mother can out fish your mother ! - Two Sheds
twosets Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 It really tightens my jaws for you to stoop so low as to bring my mother into this. She was institutionalized some time ago, but she can get out on a pass from time to time to do some fishing. My sister ran off with a bagpipe player years ago and I can't be sure, put that guy in the picture sure looks like him. Not sure about the broad. Here is a nice trout I caught last summer, much bigger than the rocks you were frying. Do the sheds have anything to do with your music? "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."
ColdWaterFshr Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Interesting discussion and report. A mysterious bagpipe player, the fab 4, a man called Pigman, large trout for breakfast, and a nagging question over what the heck is in that 2nd shed.
twosets Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 My Dad (who has not yet been institutionalized yet) is also a good fisherman and has a cool boat. Here is a bigger brown that I caught and was able to quickly photograph and release to fight another day. (No excuse about hooking him too deep) Top that. "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."
2sheds Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 Yes Twosets, I can see you released that one so fast that he still carries the steely sheen of a Norwegian Blue, pining for the fjords. But, you've got to admit that piper is kind of cute (in a manly sort of a way, of course). And speaking of mano-mano, explain to me why Missouri has still not fully sanctioned noodling. -Two Sheds
snap Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 ..yes..two sheds..between turner and horseshoe bend.Your description of the site below whiten is right on!!! The other site below whiten is about 1/2 way to riverton, river makes a 90 degree right, shoals, nice hole with campsite on right, rope hanging from tree, back of the hole narrows quickly with water moving into eroded dirt hillside on the right...great walking area from there down. What distrubed me about that site was the 4 wheeler tracks that led to this site from behind...not legal in mark twain national forest!!!
steve l Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Since my Ozark adventures are done for the year, I have taken much vicarious pleasure in this great thread! Good report & banter.
Members Terrapin Station Posted August 17, 2006 Members Posted August 17, 2006 2sheds, are you sure that the gentleman in your photograph is a bagpiper? He just doesn't have the barrel chest that is so typical of the Celts. Perhaps he is just starting out? twosets, it's a good thing you were able to photograph and release that monster in such quick manner. As I also look forward to catching snagging him sometime soon. All of this talk about 2sheds really has me thinking. In fact, I awoke in a cold sweat last night wondering, perhaps I should build a second shed. Are there negative ramifications of doing so? How many of y'all have more than one shed? Can you post blueprints?
Al Agnew Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Hey...I got two sheds AND a chicken house. But I didn't think it would make a good user name. Dang, I wish I'da thought of that. Let's see... 3outbuildings? boatshedgardenshedhenhouse? triplesheddage? toomanytools? The possibilities are endless. Thanks for opening up a whole new cyberworld.
