gurzik Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 I've fished Stagecoach many times. It's a great lake, you're definitely right about that-it's got more than its fair share of fat rainbows. But since this was kind of a short trip, we sort of wanted to stay up in the high mountain country. I lived right on the Yampa for five years, a ways further down the drainage in Craig. I'll always miss the Yampa Valley and being able to catch trout and see mule deer and antelope right out the back door. Me too, moved here 4 years ago. Go back once or twice a year for work. Will be in Breck in 2 weeks for a wedding.
Chief Grey Bear Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Very, very nice my friend! I have yet to fish the waters of Colorado. I know some turn their nose at Colorado but, not me! Next to my home state, it is my next fav!!!! Have you fished much around Pitkin?? I don't know why but I would like to hit that area. There is a motel there, that you can rent the whole thing out. Kitchen included. Very reasonable too. If you had a small group. If I remember correctly, it came to about $20 a night per person if you had 20 people. Which, yeah sounds like a lot of people. But once you get plans started, everyone wants in. And of course we all know how that can turn out too. Get the money up front!!!! NO refunds!!!!! ROAD TRIP!!!!!!! But there's plenty of of good trout water in that part of the Gunnison drainage there. That's right near the Taylor and the East, both of which are real famous trout streams. I can't say I've ever fished either one though, at least not yet. You know how it is in those kind of places though...If there is flowing water there are just about always trout.

I fished the upper East and the headwaters of the Taylor last week. The upper East was loaded with brook trout but showed little sign of bigger fish. The headwaters of the Taylor were full of fish too. The Taylor itself was loaded with fishermen in public areas with long stretches of roped-off private land but gorgeous. The area below the reservoir was shoulder to shoulder. The headwaters were beaver pondy with some serious undercut banks in flowing water. Bigger brookies there but much more picky and harder to fish. Almost everything is gorgeous around Gunnison.
