exiledguide Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Does anyone use a sling pack instead of vest when wading streams fishing for smallmouth. Old age and my fishing buddy Art Ritis has made fishing with a vest a pain in the shoulder. I am pretty sure it will work carrying flies for Trout but I wonder if I can fit very much in the way of Jigs, Grubs Worms etc. that I use on the river for Smallmouth, into a sling pack. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.
MaxDrown Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 I use a sling bag and I love it. I've been using it for years. http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=96Y1 -- Max Drown
Trout Commander Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 I have a hip pack that I often wear over the shoulder as a sling pack. Mine is a Recycled Waders bag. It works well for fly boxes (and would work well for anything in boxes) but it doesn't have any sort of built in dividers. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
Danoinark Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Being the Frugal Fly Fisherman myself....check at an Army / Navy surplus for all kinds of canvas over the shoulder bags. Actually one of the old gas mask bags works great. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Al Agnew Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Yeah, I use a sling pack--I think mine is a Fishpond...it's not an Orvis. I think the Orvis one would be better than mine, but I really like a sling pack because you can move it high on your back if you need to wade in deep water. I've also used fanny packs over the shoulder in the past.
stlfisher Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I use a sling pack as well and I use it for bass flies, trout flies, and bass lures. I much prefer them to vests and I have plenty of room for what I need.
exiledguide Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 Thanks everyone I think I will get Orvis hopefully it will help me eliminate my old friend Art Ritis
exiledguide Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 Thanks everyone I think I will get Orvis hopefully it will help me eliminate my old friend Art Ritis Update: I ended up with a Fish Pond Waterdance Guide Pack and it took every thing that I had in my vest. Finally got in the river Friday and Art Ritis missed the trip. Wore most of the time on my left hip while fishing. Having the water bottle holders was what sold me. I bought it from Fishwest in Sandy Utah on a thursday at 4:30 PM and it was delivered monday at 10:30 by the Mail. That impressed me. Thanks again for the info.
Bill Babler Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Just got my Orvis Sling Pack. Totally water proof. Ordered it for our Alaska Guiding, but they were back ordered. Looks great and fits nice. They are however a bit pricy. Big wide straps. Of course it is built to last. You buy one it is the last one you ever purchase as like everything else Orvis makes the guarantee is without equal. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
