straw hat Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Being laid up right now it gave me the chance to call Tim Banek with MDC. He enformed me that there was a new fishery biologist for Stockton. His name is Adam Bowman and he located in the Springfield office. I just had a nice conversation with the young man about gar in Stockton. He has visually seen a few in the CC area and during a recent bow tourney on the lake a nice size one was weighted in. I thought the one I caught was a short nose and he confirmed that his opinion was they were short nose as well. So it looks like the one I caught wasn't the only one. lol I think that Adam will do us an outstanding job and I asssured him that if we on this site can ever assist him in any way we would be glad to do so.

straw hat Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 What's so bad about gar? I talk to a lot of guys my dad's age and they hate them!!!! Gar are very efficient predators which can really compete with other sport fish. There eggs are toxic to other fish, man, mammals and most birds. While the meat is very boney is is very delicious. A lot of folks down south pressure cook pieces of gar (which destroys all but the biggest bones). The competition with sport fish is the biggest thing. The shortnose gar is the least offense of the gar. They are primarily creek and river fish but will spred into the back of coves in lakes. While they still feed primarily on fish they do eat more crawfish, insects and other invertabrates than other gar. If I can dig up any info on there life history I will post it.
straw hat Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Here is some pretty good info on shortnose gar if anyone is interested. http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Lepisosteus_platostomus.html

Have a good one. Kindness is the language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.-- Mark Twain
